The Kestrels are peacekeepers and guardians of the Echovald Wilds, consisting of tengu and humans. They were originally founded by Xiri Longfeather[1] to help the Canthan tengu hide from the wrath of the Ministry of Purity after Emperor Usoku's campaign to drive out non-humans from Cantha began. They currently operate out of Arborstone.

History[edit]

Early years[edit]

In 1637 CC (1127 AE), during Emperor Usoku's campaign to unify Cantha as one empire and expel non-humans, the Ministry of Purity initiated a campaign that resulted in the eradication and expulsion of tengu on Shing Jea Island. However, a group led by Xiri Longfeather gathered and created a network to escort refugees away from the empire, into the Echovald Forest, where they would be able to hide from the Ministry. Some time later, they met the friendly saltspray dragon Kuunavang and partnered with her so she could protect and hide them from the Ministry. Thus, they arrived at Arborstone, which had previously belonged to the Kurzicks and was now abandoned and in ruins. The Kestrels used it as a refuge and base, as it was still intact enough to provide shelter and was ignored by the Ministry of Purity due to its ruined status. After the Ministry fell, they chose to continue using it as a base and began the process of the rebuilding it to that end. Kuunavang concealed the tengu's role in restoring Arborstone, pretending they were simple workers helping to preserve history.[1]

With the Ministry gone, the Kestrels experienced a shift in focus, moving from guarding refugees to protecting the forest and those living in it. Though they still harbored reservations about the Canthan government, they eventually chose to reveal themselves, and subsequently began allowing humans to join their ranks despite opposition from some tengu.[1]

Modern times[edit]

Although the Ministry is no more in modern Cantha and the tengu are allowed to live in New Kaineng City, the Kestrels still have their role to play. As the conflict between the Jade Brotherhood and Speakers gangs has worsened, the Kestrels have taken it upon themselves to protect the Echovald villages caught in the crossfire.
