King Doric
King Doric was the first king of the united human kingdoms in Tyria. When he ruled, there was only one kingdom that spanned at least through Ascalon and Lion's Arch. All modern royalty in Tyria, including Kryta, are descendants of Doric himself.
Biography[edit]
Becoming king[edit]
According to scriptures of the goddess Dwayna written in 116 BE, a devastating war was raging across Tyria and reached the ears of Dwayna. Doric approached the goddess and prostated himself at her feet, which prompted Dwayna to lay her hands on him as she urged him and all her charges to lay down their weapons and offer protection to the weak. The goddess's words to Doric, "Be ye a salve to the wounded," became the famous phrase associated with the Church of Dwayna.[1] Doric was the first person to unite the human tribes of the Tyrian continent,[2] and he was crowned the king of the Republic of Ascalon in 100 BE.[3][4] He received an ambassador from Cantha in the same year.[5] It was said that he was a kind and noble ruler, a man of humility, faith and reason.[6]
At some point, the Six Gods gifted Ascalonian royalty with the god Balthazar's magical sword Sohothin and its twin Magdaer as well as a magical crown to protect the kingdom. It is said that King Doric's crown, which may have been the same as the crown which the Six had gifted to royalty, was adorned with shooting stars.[7] King Doric oversaw the expansion of humanity into Ascalon and the beginnings of Kryta, though the latter did not become an official settlement until 300 AE. He founded Rin for the study of arcane arts and in order to create a powerful defensive force with mages of immense power. Although Drascir initially served as the seat of government, Rin eventually became the capital.[8][9] The king had a summer estate in Lion's Arch. Despite Doric's involvement with Ascalon, the Orrian history scrolls would eventually claim, likely for propaganda purposes, that the king had created the human system of governance and had sheltered his people first in Orr and then, as the population grew, sent them out into Tyria with his blessing.[6]
In 1 BE, the god Abaddon used the Bloodstone to gift magic to some races of Tyria. King Doric constructed Stormcaller on Horn Hill north of Rin in 0 AE; it had originally been built to demonstrate the king's mastery of the arcane arts, but it became a weapon shortly after.[9] The magic gifted by Abaddon was eventually abused and caused many wars and casualties, so King Doric made the long trek to Arah, the City of the Gods in Orr, and pleaded to the Six Gods to end the bloodshed. Most of the gods agreed, and they sundered the Bloodstone into five smaller bloodstones to divide the magic so no single person could control all of it. The bloodstones were sealed with Doric's blood as an additional precaution, hence the name the stones would come to be known by.[10][11][12] Before the gods left in the Exodus and dropped the bloodstones into the volcano of Abaddon's Mouth, they entrusted Doric and his bloodline with the duty of protecting the bloodstones.[13] The wording of the Historical Monument of King's Watch, erected in Ascalon, implied that Doric may have died when the bloodstones were sealed with his blood.
Legacy[edit]
Doric's kingdom eventually led to the forming of the royal houses of the rival kingdoms of Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr as each ruler was a descendant of the late king.[2] Bayt Ibadah in Orr was dedicated to King Doric and had a shrine erected in his honor with its text describing the famous story about Doric's meeting with Dwayna.[1] Once a year, Orrians would illuminate the courseway from the Cathedral of Zephyrs to Doric's shrine. The lighting ceremony honored Doric's role as the first king of Tyria—and the first to kneel at Dwayna's feet.[14] Lake Doric was named after him in Kryta.
The magical crown gifted by the Six eventually passed on to the Ascalonian line of kings, with its latest wearer being King Adelbern, until it was lost in the aftermath of the Foefire. According to a human legend, the Foefire curse can be lifted in a ritual when the rightful ruler of Ascalon from King Doric's lineage returns with the crown and one of the two flaming swords—either Magdaer or Sohothin.[15][16][17][18]

- Rytlock Brimstone: This story began a thousand years ago, when this ritual was first formulated by the humans' gods—the Six. The Six gave them magic. At the same time, they also gave one of them a magical crown and two magical swords to protect the kingdom.
- <Character name>: Sohothin and Magdaer. And King Adelbern had inherited the crown?
- Rytlock Brimstone: Exactly. The crown was designed to break into four parts. When the fragments are separated, they're hard to see. This was a safeguard to keep this powerful item from falling into the wrong hands.
- <Character name>: And the crown is required for the ritual?
- Rytlock Brimstone: It is. When Adelbern enacted the ritual with Magdaer, he became a ghost. But the crown was preserved and found by charr who entered the area later. They toyed with it, and the fragments were lost.
- <Character name>: And you found them?
- Rytlock Brimstone: I found one. I'm asking you to find the others. The fragments work like magnets to each other. Once you have one, you'll feel a pull towards the others. [...]
- Rytlock Brimstone: It all hinges on Sohothin, my sword. There were originally two of them—Sohothin and another called Magdaer. They were given to the Ascalonians as protection against invasion. [...]
- Rytlock Brimstone: I finally found a reference to the ritual.
- <Character name>: And you trust the source?
- Rytlock Brimstone: It's got an Orrian stamp on it, which makes it so old, it's got to be legitimate.
