Moon
The moon,[1] sometimes called Melandru's moon at least by Canthans,[2] is Tyria's only known natural satellite. The Elonian word for "moon" appears to be Gan,[3] while the Old Canthan word for it is either Ran or Musu.[4] The moon, like the sun, is thought to have been part of Tyria for a long time, likely as long as Tyria itself has been in existence if not longer.[1]
Mad King Thorn's magic affects the environment around Lion's Arch to make it seem as if the moon has a grinning, ghoulish visage during Halloween.
Effects[edit]
The moon affected vermin as they were drawn out to the rooftops of Old Kaineng City at least prior to the great wave of the Zhaitan Disaster. According to human belief, Grenth's powers were most potent when the moon was highest in the sky.[5]
Luxons are said to be much more attuned to the moon than many other humans. Moon shells of the Jade Sea are said to not only glow like the moon, but absorb some of the moon's powers as well. Luxons believe that creatures "kissed" by moonlight possess magical properties which can be used to craft powerful artifacts and weapons.[6][7]
Sylvari believe that the moon is a powerful symbol of healing and magic, and any who dream that they are protected by the moon shall know faith and fortitude.[8]
Cultural influences[edit]
After Palawa Joko's conquest of Elona, the Order of the Sunspears and their allies have helped smuggle defectors from Joko's kingdom to the Free City of Amnoon using the code phrases "Walk in shadow. Follow the moon to Amnoon."[9]
Grand Wizard Garren's design for the Central Plaza garden in Divinity's Reach depicts the crescent moon with a face amidst other celestial bodies.[10] Gandara, the Moon Fortress is shaped like the crescent moon.
The Canthan calendar's 360-day year is broken into 12 months of 30 days each. Each month once aligned perfectly with the cycles of the moon, but over time the two cycles have diverged.[11] The Lunar New Year starts off the annual calendar.
The sylvari Tiachren was named Knight of the Moon.[12]
