Amber[edit]

The ancient trees in the Echovald Forest create a special type of amber that can be extracted.

Amber is a delicate[1] substance containing residual magic from the Jade Wind that appears in deposits within the Echovald Forest.[2] Wardens are attracted to amber deposits.[3] As of 1845 CC (1335 AE), amber is relatively cheap.[4]

Uses[edit]

Amber, when combined with jade, can be used in Kurzick rituals to create juggernauts,[2] and the two cause Luxon beasts of burden to grow to an enormous size.[5] Amber was also used in the creation of the Gods' Vengeance superweapon.[6]

Modern bladesworns use amber-infused cartridges from Echovald mines in their gunsabers, which deliver energy to both the blade and the wielder.[7] These same cartridges are also used in their pistols.[8]

Amber serves as a useful method of containing corrupted magic, which appears to include Void magic.[4] However, there appears to be some limit upon how much corrupted magic can be absorbed, as corrupted amber elementals have been seen.

Mandragor[edit]

Mandragor are violent insectoid animals with plant-like features that inhabit the Blood Legion Homelands and the region of Kourna.[9] In the past, they could also be found in the Far Shiverpeaks, on the Isle of Istan, and in the Sulfurous Wastelands; it is unknown if they still inhabit these regions. They are often hunted for their roots, which are an ingredient for the mandragor root cakes that have long been popular among Elonians.[10] They burrow through the ground, wreaking havoc on crops[11] and emerging to attack prey when they approach. Mandragor are led by queens.[12]

Physiology[edit]

The qualities of mandragor roots differ based on the type of mandragor they were harvested from. The roots of the imps and slithers of Kourna hold more water and have a smoother texture than those harvested from mandragor devils in the Blood Legion Homelands, which have a smoky flavor.[9] However, prolonged consumption of the chewy, fibrous roots of Blood Legion Homelands mandragor will eat away at the taste buds and stomach lining, leaving a person unable to consume anything else. For this reason, they were the only food the charr would give their prisoners while under the rule of the shaman caste.[13] When planted, the Istani variety's roots grow into vines that latch onto the soil and prevent erosion.[14] They are also sometimes used to make sandwiches.[15]

In addition to their roots, certain other parts of mandragor have use. Their carapaces can be stewed over several days to make mandragor soup, a favorite recipe of Mad King Thorn.[16] When clapped together, the husks of Far Shiverpeaks mandragor make a sound described as resembling the trot of Modniir hooves when struck together.[17]

Yeti[edit]

Yeti are a race of aggressive furred primates typically inhabiting the mountain ranges of Cantha, though they have been encountered in Fahranur, on the Isle of Istan during Wintersday[18] and at some point in the distant past allegedly inhabited the Shiverpeak Mountains.[19] Despite their brutish nature, yeti are able to understand concepts such as honor and courage and possess a crude language, along with certain individuals having demonstrated knowledge of the Tyrian language, to accompany their hunter-gatherer society and are also capable of staging organized raids on settlements.[20][21] They are carnivorous and appear to have a taste for rabbits.[22] They were one of many races attacked by the Ministry of Purity during their war upon nonhumans in Cantha.[23]

Culture[edit]

Yeti families are composed of clans with names such as Strongjaw Clan[24] and Cragfist Clan.[25] Yeti typically take their surname from their clan's name, though several exceptions have been seen to this rule.

Within yeti society, elderly individuals are pressured to die with honor, in order to maintain the status of their clan. Dying peacefully is scorned as weak and causes the clan of the late individual to be shunned by other clans of yeti. Because of this pressure, elderly yeti will seek out death and dangerous foes in order to bring honor to their clans. Dying with honor, by yeti standards, has historically included being killed by Angchu tengu, sworn enemies of the yeti from before the Empire of the Dragon formed.[24][21][26]

Curiously, yeti are attracted to lanterns and will attack anyone they see holding one.[27] They are known to honor their dead in certain locations which they mark as sacred.[23]
