The Ascalon Settlement is a walled township within Gendarran Fields situated between two hills. It is populated by descendants of humans who fled from Ascalon in 1072 AE after the charr took over. While it is an old settlement, many of the residents still believe it's a temporary home in the hope they will one day return to Ascalon, and some residents that believe humanity are still the better race. The northern hill of the town holds ruins from an older Krytan settlement, as well as a memorial, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, while the southern hill holds a graveyard.

Ambient dialogue[edit]

Seraph Guard (1): I should've reported in sick today.
Seraph Guard (2): Is it a cold?
Seraph Guard (1): I think I'm allergic to centaurs.
Villager (1): It's only a matter of time before the centaurs come back.
Villager (2): What are we going to do? My husband would have known what to do.
Villager (1): You need to barricade your home. Make hiding places for the children.
Seraph Soldier: Isn't Ascalon Settlement the place where people went to hide from the charr?
Villager (1): That's correct. The refugees came across the mountains and settled there.
Seraph Soldier: Times have changed, huh? Now, we're friendly with the charr, and it's the centaurs we hate.
Villager (2): As far as I know, we've always hated centaurs. And I'm still not sure about the charr.
Servant: Have you seen him? He's in a terrible state.
Servant Patrik: The parent isn't supposed to outlive the child.
Servant Patrik: I wonder what centaurs do with their prisoners.
Servant: I don't think we want to know.
Gertrude: It's time for self-pampering, m'girl. We'll be hitching a ride on an eastbound caravan.
Myrna: We had fun at the hot spring, mm? Scared all those men away with our bathing suits.
Gertrude: We didn't have no bathing suits—only beautiful, god-given birthday suits.
Myrna: Worked out just fine for us.
Myrna: We should hire a strapping young man to take us up to the arena.
Gertrude: Ooh, I do love to watch the fights. Maybe next week.
Myrna: The guard's wife will have had her babe by then, and we'll have midwifing money to gamble.
Gertrude: That skinflint paid in chickens last time. Don't count on his gold, dearie. (laugh)
Myrna: You notice how dredge have a face only a mother could love?
Gertrude: Care, girl. Care with what you say. Th'gods got ears everywhere. I suspect they wouldn't like you disrespecting one of their creatures.
Myrna: Toenails and toadstools. I didn't see the gods rushing to snatch them outta slavery.
Gertrude: Nope. They did that all by theirselves.
Villager (1): Should we... go for a walk? Stretch our legs? Breathe some fresh air?
Villager (2): I think that's a marvelous idea. Have I mentioned how much I like being married?
Villager (1): You sure? You've only had three days of it. You're not tired of me yet?
Villager (2): I'll never tire of you. Even centaurs can't come between us. I'm yours forever.
Villager (1): Forget the fresh air. Let's go back inside.
Villager (1): Why don't they just leave us alone?
Villager (2): Ascalon has a long history of conflict with primitive races. Centuries ago, it was the charr. Now, it's centaurs.
Villager (1): But why?
Villager (2): Why do savages ever do anything?
Villager (1): (Sigh) 'Cause they can.
Villager (1): Why do they keep attacking?
Villager (2): They want to take over our land and enslave or annihilate every other race.
Villager (1): It's because they're evil.
Villager (2): That too.
Villager (2): We have too many dead.
Villager (1): How many is too many?
Villager (2): One. One is too many.
Villager (1): They say the ghost of Captain Greywind watches over Ascalon Settlement.
Villager (2): I'm not sure which is creepier: centaurs outside or a 250-year-old ghost inside.
Villager (1): At least when you follow a ghost, you don't have to watch where you step.
Villager (2): Good point.
Villager (2): Have I told you how Captain Greywind started Ascalon Settlement more than 250 years ago?
Villager (1): No. But you're going to, aren't you?
Villager (2): Our ancestors were Searing refugees from Ascalon.
Villager (2): They fled the charr, but they found new enemies here: tengu, ettins, skale, and even destroyers.
Villager (2): And now it's centaurs. It's epic, don't you think?
Villager (1): In a tragic, animal-stink sort of way.
Old Villager (1): If I fall asleep, keep an eye on our stash.
Old Villager (2): You fall asleep, and I'll hit ya, old man. You can sleep when you're dead.
Old Villager (1): That might be sooner than you think.
Old Villager (1): Count it again. We've got to be close!
Old Villager (2): We are getting closer, but we have a long way to go before we can leave this doomed hole.
Seraph Soldier (1): Bring on the centaurs! I need some exercise.
Seraph Soldier (2): You're feeling better.
Seraph Soldier (1): Much. I had a couple of ales.
Seraph Soldier (2): You're not supposed to drink before your shift.
Seraph Soldier (1): You gotta enjoy life while you can. You never know when a centaur's gonna stick you dead.
Doomsayer Senug: The deeds of today are nothing if we not earn the gods forgiveness.
Doomsayer Senug: This tide of evil will overcome us if we do not repent for the sins!
Villager: You're a fool! The gods have abandoned us! Evil rules the world now!
Doomsayer Senug: Why have the gods left? Our misdeeds drove them away! We must make amends!
Villager: They should make amends to us! They should beg our forgiveness!
Doomsayer Senug: We cannot stay the swell of evil! It is as fortold!
Doomsayer Senug: Amend your ways! Repent! The gods await your confession! We are the source of their pain!
Doomsayer Senug: The end approaches! I feel the breath of annihilation upon my neck.
Doomsayer Senug: On your knees! Beg Dwayna's forgiveness! On your knees! Offer Grenth your regret! On your knees! Show Melandru your remorse!
Doomsayer Senug: We must lift our voices and plead them to return!
Doomsayer Senug: Our pride and willful dismissal of their gifts have left us without their guidance for more than two centuries.
Doomsayer Senug: Repent! Repent, before it's too late!
After being insulted by Gertrude
Sergeant Birnoth: How many times do I have to tell you to stop pestering people, you mean old hag!
Gertrude: Why I never. This kind of behavior would have never been tolerated in my day.
Sergeant Birnoth: Well it's not your day anymore lady, so don't go insulting our visitors.
In the graveyard
Captain Greywind: The White Mantle, the Lionguard... They're peacocks who like pretty garb and puffing out their chests.
Greywind Guard: The Ascalon people, on the other hand, have always had to fight to protect their home.
Captain Greywind: Because this area is so dangerous, I've taken it upon myself to provide training to all Ascalonians.
Greywind Guard: You're a brave leader, Captain.
Captain Greywind: It's a beautiful land, but I remember the war too well.
Captain Greywind: We were out scavenging for goods when a massive beast crossed our path.
Greywind Guard: How distressing!
Captain Greywind: We lost many settlers before we escaped.
