Captain Bidelia
Captain Bidelia is a sylvari captain who led a crew of fellow sylvari to Castora.
Biography[edit]
Bidelia awakened in the Grove when sylvari were still new to Tyria, likely making her a secondborn. She had recurring dreams about travelling to an unknown island teeming with magic. This compulsion turned into her Wyld Hunt, and she began seeking a means to reach her destination. Upon meeting like-minded sylvari who also felt a pull towards the Unending Ocean, the sylvari ventured to Lion's Arch to find a ship. However, many sailors were still getting used to sylvari existing so that they were fearful of letting Bidelia's group onboard any vessel. Bidelia resolved to become a captain herself and teach herself and her fellow sylvari how to sail.
It took Bidelia years of bartering for a vessel, learning to sail, and building out her crew. Their group found a few more daring souls that were not afraid of the Elder Dragon Zhaitan's Dead Ship armada patrolling the Sea of Sorrows, and they eventually set sail west. They ran across unnatural storms and fog blocking the way forward and eventually hit a rock which scuttled their ship and led to many casualties. The few who survived clung to the scraps of their ship, with no perception that they would survive the hour. Despite the harrowing experience, the surviving sylvari made it to shore and eventually joined the community of Hullgarden made from various castaways over the years. The sylvari learned that the island was called Castora and was full of dangers but also opportunity.[1]
When the norn Castaway Westergard found an old journal referencing Orr, Bidelia suggested that it might have washed up after Zhaitan had caused the Rising of Orr; however, Westergard doubted that the journal would have made it across the ocean in one piece and speculated that it might have been written when Orr was still a thriving kingdom, which in turn suggested that multiple castaway societies could have inhabited Castora over the centuries.[2]
