  • Head to the jail in the Black Citadel.
  • Listen to the conversation.
  • Read the letter.

Rewards[edit]

Walkthrough[edit]

After completing the previous story step, you will receive mail from Braham requesting that you meet in Hoelbrak near Waypoint (map icon).png Great Lodge Waypoint. Upon entering the story instance, Braham, Eir, and Knut have a brief conversation about rebuilding Cragstead.

Afterward, head to the Point of interest (map icon).png Citadel Stockade in the Black Citadel to meet with Rox. The easiest way to get there is to head west from Waypoint (map icon).png Hero's Waypoint, turning right immediately after entering the main building (Imperator's Core). Alternatively, you can use Waypoint (map icon).png Imperator's Waypoint and jump down the hole in the center of the room and head east from the ground level. Here, you will witness a brief cutscene between Rytlock and Rox.

After that, your mentor (depends on race) will send you a letter requesting your presence at the bonfire held near Waypoint (map icon).png Might and Main Waypoint in Hoelbrak. Talk to Braham and Rox for credit toward Arenanet Points.png Avenger of the Dispossessed, then interact with the Victory Bonfire to complete the mission.

After the mission is complete, you will receive a final letter advertising the Fractals of the Mists. This has no bearing on the story.

Achievements[edit]

  • Speak with both Braham and Rox during the mission.
  • Make sure to do so before interacting with the bonfire.
  • Granted upon interacting with the Victory Bonfire. This is a required objective and will end the story step.
  • Complete the story step.

No Rest for Me

<Character name>, I can't thank you enough for helping avenge Cragstead. The Molten Alliance was foolish to push us, but that device...I'm glad we destroyed it. I'm on my way to Knut Whitebear in Hoelbrak. I owe him nothing, but reporting what happened is the right thing to do... Besides, I heard from one of the prisoners that Ottilia might be in Hoelbrak. Safe. I want to make sure she's okay.

Rox sends her thanks too. She's taking captured Alliance members back to the Black Citadel stockades. I know we come from different worlds, but Rox says we were thrown together for a reason. She doesn't think this will be the last time we meet, and I hope she's right. Maybe I'll see you in Hoelbrak. I owe you the largest glass of ale you can carry.

Oh, and Rox suggests you go to the Citadel to help her with the interrogations. Who knows what intel you two might collect.

May Wolf guide your steps, my friend.

—Braham Eirsson

At Knut Whitebear's Loft[edit]

During the cutscene
Braham: I thought you should know. They were almost all... By the time I got to Cragstead, a dozen of my friends...
Knut: I see. May the Spirits guide them to peace.
Braham: If we'd stood together...but no. It's every hunter for himself, right?
Eir: It's not that simple.
Braham: Yes. It is.
Eir: What are you going to do now?
Braham: You care? I'm going to rebuild Cragstead with whoever's left of my friends.
Knut: The smart choice is to regroup and finish the fight later. Whatever you do, may the Spirits keep you safe.
After the cutscene
Knut Whitebear: He has Bear's backbone and Raven's wit.
Eir Stegalkin: Yes. He got those from his father. I just wish he didn't also have Wolf's heart.
Talking to your allies
Braham: I'm glad I ran into you, Commander. Everything you did...it means a lot. All for a stranger you didn't even know. You'll always find a warm welcome in Cragstead. Visit anytime.
Talk more option tango.png Are you headed back to Cragstead?
Not yet, but soon. I want to enjoy the victory bonfire with the remaining refugees. We deserve it. After that, I'll return home. I want to make sure Ottilia is okay. I haven't seen her yet...
Talk end option tango.png Enjoy the celebrations...and best of luck.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be sure to say hello, Braham.
Eir Stegalkin: I heard you went to Cragstead, with Braham. I hope you had a good fight. I was worried for...those homesteaders.
Talk more option tango.png Braham fights well.
No doubt. I wish I could've fought beside him, but I couldn't leave Hoelbrak to fend for itself. I tried to convince Braham to stay, too. He'll probably never forgive me...
Talk more option tango.png So it's true. Braham is your son?
It's true. I was young and eager to prove myself. He's lived with his father all these years. Borje, that foolish man... We agreed it was the best thing for him. For Braham.
Talk end option tango.png If you put in the time, Braham'll figure it out.
Talk end option tango.png He'll come around
Talk end option tango.png Every fight is a good fight.
Knut: I hear you've been busy, my friend. I bet it was a satisfying venture to send the Molten Alliance packing. A good kick to the face... I want to hear all the details, maybe over a cold glass of ale?
Talk more option tango.png Like you said, it was a...venture.
I'm sure it was. The Vigil came through for us here. Apparently the Molten Alliance has bases lining the mountains... It doesn't sound like they'll be stirring up any more trouble. For now, at least.
Talk end option tango.png We'll see.
Talk end option tango.png Some other time.

At the Citadel Stockade[edit]

During the cutscene
Rytlock: Chose a new pet?
Rox: It chose me.
Rytlock: Well, it suits you. Train it well.
Rox: I will.
Rox: I was wondering, Tribune. When...
Rytlock: When will you know if you're qualified to join my warband? When I'm damn good and ready, gladium, and not before.
Rox: Yes, Tribune. Sorry, Tribune.
Talking to your allies
Rytlock Brimstone: Another time, Commander. I've got things to do. Talk to Seneca if you need assistance.
Talk more option tango.png Hey, what are you gonna do to Rox?
If I told you, I'd have to kill you. Don't worry. She's tough. She can probably handle whatever we throw at her, so long as she's smart and asks for help. Gotta go.
Talk end option tango.png Okay.
Talk end option tango.png I will.
Seneca the Relentless: Scorch me, I haven't seen this place so full since...I can't remember.
Talk more option tango.png What's going to happen to them?
They'll stay here until the imperator is done interrogating them, then he'll judge and sentence them. Chances are they'll be sent to the Blood Citadel, where they'll be properly punished.
Talk more option tango.png Have they explained why they did it?
They felt more powerful in the Alliance than alone. They obviously want to take territory. Who knows how far they'll go. I'm glad we can rely on folks like you to stop them.
Talk more option tango.png What will happen to all their weapons?
We're salvaging what we can. When a factory is destroyed, it takes the weapons caches with them. No Iron Legion soldier worth his salt could pass up a chance to study the molten arms though.
Talk end option tango.png I see.
Talk end option tango.png That makes sense.
Talk end option tango.png I can't feel sorry for them.
Talk end option tango.png I'm just glad we got some alive.
Rox: I didn't expect to see you. It's good to see a friendly face. Tribune Brimstone has me interrogating the prisoners. I owe you a big thanks for your help at the hatchery. Rytlock was impressed.
Talk more option tango.png Have you gotten them to talk?
A little. Been spending more time keeping them from killing each other. Both blame the other for their defeat. Any comradery the Molten Alliance had is gone. You're welcome to give it a shot, though.
Talk more option tango.png What're you up to now?
I have a long-overdue date with a hot meal and a long, relaxing bath. As soon as this interrogation is done, there's a hot spring in the mountains with my name on it.
Talk more option tango.png So, you've decided to adopt that little devourer?
More like he adopted me. Maybe we were meant for each other. Soon as I can, I'll take him back to the hatchery so we can train together.
Talk more option tango.png How's the warband bid going?
So far so good, though I've only just begun. I think they were impressed by how we handled the hatchery, but that was just a preliminary test. There will be more, and it'll be brutal.
Talk more option tango.png Call on me, if you need help.
Absolutely! Thanks for offering. I'm going to need all the luck and help I can get. I'm familiar with Tribune Brimstone's depth of imagination when it comes to testing. I'll be in touch.
Talk end option tango.png I look forward to it.
Talk end option tango.png Good luck!
Talk end option tango.png Good luck with him.
Talk end option tango.png I know what you meant.
Talk end option tango.png I may do that.
Talk end option tango.png Glad to have helped. See you later.
Rytlock looks at the prisoners before leaving
Rytlock Brimstone: (chuckles)
Talking to the first Veteran Dredge Prisoner
It doesn't matter what you do to me. We dredge will not be ignored! Success was in our grasp! If only the Flame Legion weren't as thick as bedrock...
Talk more option tango.png Thick? What do you mean?
Too thick to learn new tricks. We tried, but they're trapped in the past. All they know is fury. Give them anything sensitive to handle, like dredge machinery, and they crumple under the pressure.
Talk more option tango.png So, why did you ally with them?
Vova told us it was safe. That it was a good idea.
Talk more option tango.png But why the Flame Legion?
They control the lava, the beautiful lava that flows through our caves. We used it to power our hybrid machinery.
Talk end option tango.png Those weapons are gone now.
Talk end option tango.png I see.
Talk end option tango.png I'm not surprised.
Talk end option tango.png Too bad, so sad.
Talking to the Veteran Flame Legion Prisoner
(If male charr)
Those dredge better be ready for Gaheron's fires. They're gonna burn for this. Bumbling pinheads!
Talk more option tango.png It's not turning out like you wanted?
You might say we overestimated the dredge ability to pull their heads out of their holes. All they want is to dig deeper, when the territory worth grabbing is on the surface.
Talk more option tango.png What made you do it?
It sounded like a good idea at the time. Mine the dredge for all their secrets, use them to take territory, then put them in their places.
Talk end option tango.png I see.
Talk end option tango.png Ah hah.
Talk end option tango.png I don't think they'll be alone.
(if female charr)
You dare raise your eyes to me, female? If I weren't in this cage, I'd teach you how to behave.
Talk more option tango.png But you are in a cage. Why is that, do you suppose?
Never underestimate the ability of a lesser being to burn down your plans. Should've kept the dredge on a shorter leash.
Talk end option tango.png You're going to prison for a long time.
(otherwise)
What? You got a problem with me?
Talk more option tango.png Just curious. What did you hope to accomplish?
You could never understand because you and your people are destined to die in our fires. Your time is coming. You should prepare yourselves.
Talk more option tango.png What are you talking about?
Nothing. Nevermind. Go fight your dragons. If you don't, they'll annihilate you.
Talk more option tango.png They'll annihilate you too.
I doubt it. We'll be here long after the dragons have swallowed you and yours.
Talk end option tango.png In your dreams.
Talk end option tango.png Not if I have anything to say about it.
Talk end option tango.png You talk big. I'm going now.
Talk end option tango.png Not any more.
Talking to the second Veteran Dredge Prisoner
It was the Flame Legion! I warned them! I warned ALL of them that those good-for-nothing occultists...
Talk more option tango.png Easy to blame someone else for your misjudgments, isn't it?
Misjudgments? Argh, perhaps... We thought we could work on common ground, merge our technologies... We'd never have to worry about being conquered again. We believed them!
Talk more option tango.png Them?
I've already said too much. If I were you, I'd direct my questions at the charr. They're far more guilty than we are.
Dignity Shame on you.
Shame on me? Shame on my leaders! They let themselves be seduced by power. We were fine until we got greedy. Evil trickster! Evil!
Talk end option tango.png I see you have nothing more to add.
Charisma Cooperate and things will go better for you.
Things couldn't go worse. We're doomed! Doomed by our own greed for power. Blinded by seductive words and slippery promises. And now, we're losing our weapons caches. Our factories. (sob)
Talk end option tango.png I see you have nothing more to add.
Ferocity You blew it. Your plan failed.
The plan was flawed from the beginning. We were not orchestrating our own momentum. Instead, we listed to the seductive promises of that snake and stuck our heads out too far of our holes.
Talk end option tango.png I see you have nothing more to add.
Talk end option tango.png This isn't getting me anywhere.
Talk end option tango.png I'll leave you to Rox's interrogation.
Talk end option tango.png Hmph.

Exemplary Performance

You're as tactful as ever, <Character name>. The Molten Alliance has scattered—they're disorganized and panicking and won't bother us again any time soon. Unfortunately, we still have no viable theories as to why the two forces coalesced. I'll continue to examine the subject from Rata Sum. In the meantime, you should use this respite to rejuvenate yourself at the celebratory bonfires. It's your efforts in the field that demoralized the invaders.

Diessa Plateau Secured

Solid work, <Character name>. The Molten Alliance forces have scattered and retreated. They're unlikely to bother us again. The only thing worth considering now is why the cowards joined forces in the first place. I plan to review the issue. You, on the other hand, have earned yourself a sabbatical at the victory bonfires. Use the time wisely. Things get awfully eventful awfully fast these days.

Relief at Last

We couldn't have done it without you, <Character name>. The Molten Alliance has deteriorated for the moment. Dredge still inhabit Wayfarer Foothills, but they're independent of the alliance. My next task is to find out what caused those two forces to unite. While I'm investigating the matter, I encourage you to rest and warm yourself at the celebration bonfires. This battle was hard-fought, and your contributions have earned you the right to a little relaxation.

It's Over

Your deeds have come to fruition, <Character name>. The Molten Alliance has crawled back into its holes for now, overcome by the efforts of adventurers like you. My only concern is what inspired their forces to ally. While I explore the possibilities, I'd like you to take this time to restore your strength and relish the victory celebration at the bonfires.

Victory

The Molten Alliance has splintered. Hoelbrak and the Black Citadel are free of the invading forces, for now. What remains unknown is why the dredge and Flame Legin collaborated to begin with. I've decided to explore the matter. However, I expect you to use this time to recuperate in the warmth of the celebratory bonfires. You were instrumental in our success and deserve the break.

At the Victory Bonfire in Hoelbrak[edit]

Talking to your allies
Ahava Greywolf: Spirits be praised that it's finished, though I have to say, it's still hard to celebrate when I know what heartbreak and hardship the refugees went through. Maybe now they can start over.
Talk more option tango.png What are they doing now?
The Consortium camp in Southsun Cove is calling to some people. Others, though, are talking about following some kid named Braham back to rebuild his village. Kid's got a way about him. Inspiring.
Talk end option tango.png Interesting. 'Bye.
Talk end option tango.png I hope so. 'Bye.
Rox: Commander! Good to see you. Figured I'd make my way to Hoelbrak after the interrogations, take a minute to savor the quiet. Plus, Braham is quite the singer when he's three glasses of ale deep...
Talk more option tango.png Hopefully the quiet lasts.
Word is that the Molten Alliance has scattered. The Vigil and Wolfborn are caging up the stragglers, trying to gather any intel they can. The Citadel jail's going to need a new annex at this rate.
Talk more option tango.png I meant to ask in the mine, about the explosives...
Oh, yeah... I... I'm not ready to talk about that. Not yet. I've got a weight on my shoulders, and sometimes it keeps me from opening up. It keeps me from living. But if I take it day by day...
Talk end option tango.png We can talk whenever you're ready.
Talk end option tango.png That's good to hear.
Talk end option tango.png Sounds like you're having fun!
Braham: Commander! I'm glad you could make it. Sit, please. Grab an ale and we'll savor a moment of reprieve.
Talk more option tango.png I'm glad to see you in high spirits.
High enough spirits. The loss of life at Cragstead... Well, at least we can celebrate our victory against the Molten Alliance. The Vigil is keeping an eye out for any more weapons facilities.
Talk end option tango.png Hopefully this is the end of it.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks, Braham. Maybe I will.
Victory Flamekeeper: Join me at the bonfire, friend. We celebrate the Molten Alliance's defeat! It was hard won, but well deserved.
Talk end option tango.png To victory!
Interacting with the Victory Bonfire
This bonfire represents our victory over the Molten Alliance. A satisfying chorus of snaps and crackles fills the air, though there's something bittersweet about the smell.

My story[edit]

Knut Whitebear's Loft loading screen.jpg

I regrouped with Braham in Hoelbrak to report back to Knut and Eir. His friends, his family—most of them were killed during the raid at Cragstead. Knut expressed his regrets, but his remorse felt forced. I think Braham's anger was justified—if anything, given the loss of his home his anger was modest.

Rox was already hands-on with her interrogation when I got back to the Black Citadel. Rytlock isn't ready to welcome her to his warband, yet. He doesn't pass out compliments as readily as, say, Logan, but his warmth is subtle.

After everything I witnessed at the hatchery and mine, I can tell Rox is a good one. A little weary, but she's sharp—and with the way things are escalating, we need more allies.

I finally regrouped with Braham in Hoelbrak to participate in "victory" celebrations. We sat by the fire for a while, listening to drunken ballads and clanking glasses of ale. Standing there, I couldn't help but feel uneasy. I suspect this is the beginning of something bigger. I can't put my finger on it, but all those experiments... Well, we'll see what happens next.

Tonight, we celebrate. Even if all we're celebrating is a moment of rest.
