Bonus chests (also known as bouncy chests[1][2][3] or reward chests[4]) are a reward delivery method through the user interface, as opposed to looting objects in the world or dropped items from enemies.

The chests will frequently perform a little wiggle, urging the player to open them, hence the name "bouncy chest". They will also occasionally exhibit a glow.

Mechanics[edit]

Multiple bonus chests
  • The rewards appear as a chest icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
    • If the minimap is placed in that section, the chest will show along the top of the map.
  • Up to three chests are shown at a time, with a new reward being placed on the right, pushing the other chests to the left, and the left-most (oldest) chest out of view.
Interaction
  • Left-clicking a chest will open a reward window showing its content, and a button to accept the reward, moving it to your inventory.
  • Most chests can instead be right-clicked to instantly accept the rewards without the intermediary popup.
  • Some variants can be postponed instead of accepted after examining. Popups without this feature can still be dismissed by incurring a loading screen.
Limits [verification requested]
  • If there are already 20 chests stored upon earning another chest, its content will be automatically accepted instead.
  • Upon entering a new map instance (by changing maps or relogging), only 4 chests will be kept in the queue, with all others being automatically accepted.
  • Expansion advertisements do not count towards these limits.
  • Level rewards will not get automatically accepted through either means, but do count towards the limits.
  • The order of the chests may shift around upon loading screens.
  • The Mount trial can get automatically accepted.

Dynamic events[edit]

For an overview of some regions' generic event rewards, see: Bonus chest/Rewards

Bonus chests became ubiquitous with Heart of Thorns which awarded them from all successful events. Following expansions have continued this reward delivery, and it's now an anomaly if they are not awarded.

The chests contain different items depending on the region and zone, but they generally follow a pattern of containing a currency, some pieces of gear, and sometimes miscellaneous consumables.

Higher levels of participation do not give more rewards, but the graphic changes with the reward level achieved. For sub-bronze participation, the reward looks like a plain wooden chest. Some events' chests may be hard cut-off by diminishing returns, giving full rewards until the chest stops being awarded from multiple repeated completions.

If an event rewarding a bonus chest causes the next tier of map bonus reward to be reached, the chest will contain an additional "+ Bonus" item, instead of directly depositing it into your inventory upon event completion.

Larger events, such as world bosses, will only reward their bonus chest once per day per account. World boss events additionally require the character to be at least level 40 in order to be rewarded rare equipment or better.[5]

Map meta-events[edit]

During map meta events players are awarded chests with rewards relative to their participation. The colors of these chests vary by event and stage.

Cannot be instantly accepted with right-click.
