Sybil

Sybil is a mursaat who used her magical box to escape the destruction of Bava Nisos by the titans and was trapped within her own pocket realm. Since then she has been trapping beings who interact with her box in her pocket realm, turning them into her eternal game pieces to entertain herself with.

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Sybil resided in Bava Nisos up to the titan invasion of the city in 1072 AE. Showing no interest in her fellow mursaat's bloodshed, she hid from the titans in her own pocket realm located inside her magical box. She tried leaving the box some time after, only to find the world in ruins. When she tried leaving later, she realized the shock of leaving after spending centuries in the box would prove fatal even to her. She realized that she had become bound by the rules of her own game.

As beings interacted with her box and were sucked into the pocket realm, Sybil offered them a chance to play against her: If they won, she would let them leave. If they lost, they would remain as her game pieces for eternity. One of Sybil's pieces, a member of the White Mantle, was talkative for a time, delighting Sybil who had been yearning to speak with someone after her years of isolation. However, the White Mantle member went insane upon learning that she could never leave the box again.

Janthir Wilds[edit]

In 1338 AE, the kodan scout Riven Marl explored the ruined outskirts of Bava Nisos and happened upon Sybil's box only to be sucked into it like any previous victim who had interacted with it. They lost the game, becoming Sybil's latest game piece to alleviate the mursaat's boredom. Investigating leads of Riven Marl's disappearance a few days later, the Pact Commander discovered the box and was likewise trapped in the twisted game, discovering the kodan's fate. Due to lacking game pieces of their own, the Commander lost, but Sybil discovered a curious loophole in the rules of the game: she could not claim the Commander whom death had surrendered previously.

Intending to still get some entertainment out of the game despite it ending on a surprising stalemate, Sybil proposed an offer to the Commander: she would permit a rematch to barter for Riven Marl's life if the Commander returned with pieces of their own to make the game more exciting. The Commander accepted the terms and tracked down Marl's carved game pieces which resembled members of Destiny's Edge before returning to challenge the mursaat again. After a fierce match, the Commander prevailed, liberating the kodan from the twisted game.

Sybil despaired that she would end up alone again, revealing herself to be a sore loser despite her earlier boasts to the contrary. Even when the Commander tried to argue how the mursaat's game had only made her game pieces suffer, Sybil remained dismissive of their, proving herself unrepentant to the end. After given some time to think about it, Sybil finally accepted her defeat bitterly but proposed that the Commander should return to play against her in the future to give her someone to talk with. The Commander was given a choice to tentatively agree with or outright refuse the mursaat's offer but upon leaving they nevertheless intended to hand the box over to the Wizard's Court for safekeeping so no hapless traveler would ever be trapped in the twisted game again.

Dialogue[edit]

During the Missing Scout
Speak your mind.
Talk more option tango.png Who are you?
Sybil. What titles I held no longer matter, do they? So it goes.
Talk more option tango.png You're alive.
As long as I remain here. My sanctuary suspends time but cannot stop it—and the shock of leaving after centuries has always proven fatal.
Talk more option tango.png You didn't plan to leave?
I certainly did. I tried not long after I entered, but all the world was in ruins. By the time it mended itself, I...had few options.
Talk more option tango.png And so you trapped these "pieces" here to fight for you?
They simply played and lost. If I had any interest in bloodshed, I would have died with the others.
Talk more option tango.png That reason may be even worse.
You may sit and fume about it, if you like. I don't mind company.
Talk end option tango.png I'll pass.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be back to finish this.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be back to finish this.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be back to finish this.
Talk end option tango.png So it goes.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be back to finish this.
During the Mursaat's Game
Alone. I'll be alone.
Talk more option tango.png You already were.
The first piece I captured... I didn't care for her pious nonsense, but she spoke—until she learned that we couldn't leave. Not a coherent word from her since.
Talk more option tango.png Despair can do that to someone.
I could lapse into mindless screaming, if it pleased me! I could make my skull an empty grave. Am I the only one with the fortitude to bear it?
Talk more option tango.png You gave them no other escape.
Is that why they all break? Too weak to challenge me. Too stubborn to accept defeat gracefully.
Talk more option tango.png Can you accept defeat gracefully?
I must. I have no choice. But...you can choose. You could come and go as you please from time to time. You could come back.
Talk end option tango.png I'll consider it.
Talk end option tango.png You're on your own.
Talk end option tango.png You haven't learned anything.
Talk end option tango.png Goodbye, Sybil.
Talk end option tango.png Another White Mantle betrayed by her "gods".
Talk end option tango.png Goodbye, Sybil.
