Note: Doyen Sidony has asked me to independently vet his guests for the upcoming tour and visit. A task I do not take lightly, given the sensitive nature of what we do in this corner of Castora. I expect they will respect and honor my assessments. —Azzo, Amanuensis to Doyen Sidony
Name: Tirrs Alkessh
Title: Keeper of Threads
Role: Scribe and recordkeeper, diplomatic emissary of the Forgotten
Hobbies: Weaving tapestries, storytelling, practicing illusory magic
Notes: I have observed many diplomatic summits where Tirss was present. They are a clever and fascinating individual, always with an anecdote or verse of some foreign scripture to break the tension when tempers flare. As for their faith, Tirss tends to keep that part of their life mostly private. We don't know who exactly the Forgotten pray to, only that they are separated from the so-called "gods" they revere. Such beliefs are worthy of our scrutiny, but that's no reason to spurn Tirss's company and counsel.
Risks: Keeper Alkessh enjoys a personal friendship with the doyen, and thus a certain level of trust. Other Forgotten emissaries have expressed an—at times—pointed interest in learning how to harness and store greater quantities of magic. I do not believe that Tirss's own silence on the matter is an indication that their people have since discovered the means to do so on their own, but seeing as this rare visit to Castora will include a few rudimentary seminars on ley magic and how to harness it, it will be interesting to assess whether the keeper's interests and loyalties shift as a result.
Name: Gruna Waylit
Title: Chief Pathfinder and head of Clan Way
Role: Diplomatic emissary of the Deldrimor
Hobbies: "Ley-riding," boxing, and cider brewing
Notes: Gruna of the Waylit family is as bemusing as she is frustrating. For a people whose individuals only know the experience of a couple hundred years before their passing, I am impressed by what they're capable of in a lifetime. While the modestly sized Clan Way of the Deldrimor dwarves isn't as far traveled as the Brinehewn of the Great Turtle Spine or the Gilgriff of the eastern Dawnsheer Range, they have mapped no small amount of the Tyrian continent's subterranean ley-line network. Gruna is no exception. Her clan's maps have been a reliable tool for tracking the migration patterns of the dragons and their minions, as they are drawn to large pools or currents of ley-line magic.
Risks: Gruna is—and I take no pleasure in expressing this—taxingly blunt, at least by my standards. One might see Gruna's candor and attribute as having a certain strategic value. She speaks plainly where many of us would not, goading reactions and extracting hidden agendas. My express concern would be whether her form of "sincerity" would be ideal for this more delicate affair. Still, I believe there are some measures we can take to reduce the risk of a diplomatic incident.
Name: Zeffo
Title: The Dreamspinner
Role: Diviner, astronomer, diplomatic emissary of the jotun
Hobbies: Stellar whist, baking, and percussion music
Notes: Of the doyen's invites, Zeffo is the youngest, though of middle age among his own. A pursy giant draped in flowing garments, Zeffo carries a certain calm and warmth that most find disarming. He is a shrewd choice for the doyen, given Gruna's invitation. Of course, his tempered demeanor also serves his work as a diviner and astronomer. There is a level of emotional and arcane equilibrium required to wield the kind of divining magics the jotun use for astral card readings, as well as their charting of terrestrial and celestial events, and Zeffo has some mastery over these practices.
Risks: While I do not dismiss the practice of divination and its interpretations out of hand, those prone to superstition or paranoia may sometimes fall prey to even the vaguest and varied foresight of what they believe has yet to come. There is danger in that, but it would be unfair to describe Zeffo's practice of these crafts as ill intended. Some responsible jotun warn that the future is not fixed, and that they simply explore the winding rivers and smaller streams of potentiality. Still, for this visit, I would recommend that Zeffo be asked to refrain from any divining demonstrations.
- At the Hallowed Archive
Azzo,
I am overseeing a several-days-long enchantment at the forge, so this dictated letter will have to suffice instead of a private conversation. You inquired if I planned to extend an invitation to any mursaat after receiving my short list for the summit. Allow me to clarify.
My opposition would see my omission as a pointed slight, an ungenerous and divisive error in these auspicious times, as great scaled beasts and their ilk rise from Tyria's berth and threaten the stability of our people and others. I have only ever motioned for caution and restraint regarding the mursaat. I am not without empathy; their tether to Nayos was severed and destroyed, stranding them on a strange and harsh world. You may recall that I approved several of their brightest and most illuminated minds to study at the conservatories in Stellis Quor under our finest crafters and arcane practitioners.
In the same era, they constructed Apavim—with some guidance and support—and were permitted to send emissaries to our more public-facing symposiums to participate in discussion. Simply put, they have made great strides in their relatively short time here. However, they remain ever demanding, even as these ancient dragons stir fresh anxieties for all. They have yet to contribute, to make good on our investments. Now they poke and prod at the Forgotten for favors as we retract our open hands just a little. I find it rather telling, or at least, distasteful on their part.
So, no. For now, the mursaat will not receive an invite to one of our most sacred outposts. Perhaps one day my opinion may change. Despite what Isgarren might suggest, I am not immutable.
