Seer
“We are the stewards of this world, Tyria's masters and protectors. We've no need of gods or spirits to guide us; we rise to godhood ourselves through our rites, through our own strength.
The seers were an enigmatic and magical race who were responsible for creating the original Bloodstone and the Shadowstone. They briefly allied with the other elder races of the dwarves, Forgotten, jotun, and mursaat to oppose the Elder Dragons during the previous dragonrise. The seers were ultimately killed off in a war against the mursaat, leaving behind few potent artifacts and ruins.
Physiology[edit]
The ancient seers were genderless[1] but did often choose a preferred gender to be addressed by. They had four arms, grey skin, and could levitate.
History[edit]
Early history[edit]
The seers once dwelled in the city of Stellis Quor on Castora and dedicated themselves to studying crafting and the arcane arts in its conservatoires under the leadership of their doyen Sidony the Shadowkeeper, the Immortal Leader. At some point they invited representatives of the elder races of dwarves, Forgotten, and jotun to visit and study in Stellis Quor although some seers voiced doubt about whether these races, especially the mursaat, could be trusted at first.[2] As time passed, however, some mursaat were allowed to study under the seers' finest architects in Stellis Quor, and the former would implement seer-inspired designs into their architecture while building the mursaat city of Apavim.[3]
The seers specialized in mastering magic and were known to have created potent blessings and curses. One of their notable accomplishments was the difficult Rite of Divinity, or "Divitium Nava", which involved using the magical staff Ancora at a specific well of power on Castora to attune chosen seers to the very flow of magic in Tyria and ascend them as immortal and magically powerful beings. "Divcia nava," a lesser version of this rite which did not involve Ancora, would later be used by Isgarren to ascend non-seers as immortal wizards.[4][5] The seers also created Legavo, later known as the Scepter of Orr, as well as Mulmund, later known as the Staff of the Mists, as defense against extraplanar invaders although the staves did not prevent the Six Gods' arrival with humans from the Mists.[6]
Seer-mursaat war[edit]
During the previous rise of the Elder Dragons, the seer doyen Sidony rallied the elder races of dwarves, Forgotten, jotun, and mursaat to form an alliance to fight back against the Elder Dragons.[7] However, prior to the assault on the Elder Dragon Zhaitan which the Forgotten and mursaat had been preparing for, Sidony suddenly decided to withdraw seer support,[8] while the dwarves and the jotun neglected to join the assault as well. The resulting battle led to the deaths of many Forgotten and mursaat, and the latter never forgave the seers for this perceived act of betrayal.[9]
The seers focused on forging the Shadowstone which they used to amplify their own magical abilities. Using the power of the Shadowstone, they created the original Bloodstone to contain all untainted magic to hide it from the Elder Dragons.[10][11][12]
Feeling betrayed by the rest of the alliance's lack of assistance, the mursaat refused to give up their magic into the Bloodstone and instead abandoned their former allies by using their shadowcraft to shift themselves beneath the skin of the world, out of phase with Tyria via a shadowed pocket of existence, as a way to escape the Elder Dragons.[13][14][15]
During this time, the Forgotten discovered a great spell that granted Glint, champion and scion of the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik, a will free from control by the Elder Dragon. Glint in turn concealed many of the elder races, including the seers, from the Elder Dragons who gradually fell into slumber to wait for the next dragonrise.[14] Some time after the dragons had returned to slumber, the mursaat returned and waged a war against the seers for millennia despite the seers heavily outnumbering the few hundred mursaat at first.[8] During this conflict the seers were able to develop a defense against the mursaat's Spectral Agony magic. However, it was created too late in the war, and the seers lost. The seers went all but extinct although the mursaat also suffered significant losses in the conflict.[16] The mursaat built their new capital, Bava Nisos located in Janthir, on the battleground where the seer-mursaat war had ended.[13]
Last conflicts[edit]
Thousands of years later in 1072 AE, one of the few surviving seers aided some Ascalonian heroes in fighting the returned mursaat and, intentionally or not, releasing the titans. During the Krytan Civil War in 1079 AE, the asuran golemancer Zinn was experimenting with a seer's corpse to develop the Spectral Infusion.[17] Seer magic became an instrumental part of the Shining Blade's plan to defeat the White Mantle and counter the remaining mursaat during the Battle for Lion's Arch.
The last of the seers lived long enough to witness the aftermath of the Krytan Civil War and was aware of the disappearance of the last known surviving mursaat, Lazarus the Dire, who had vowed to return to avenge his fallen brethren. Before dying, the last seer bestowed the Shining Blade organization an ancient weapon of seer origins, which became known as the Shining Blade, and a duty to destroy the last surviving mursaat should he ever return to threaten the world.[18]
Legacy[edit]
Seer ruins existed in the world long after their creators' passing, but those who found the ruins did not know of their origins.[19] During the Pact's campaign against the Elder Dragon Zhaitan and its Risen minions in Orr in 1325 AE, Scholar Randall Greyston of the Durmand Priory led an expedition into the Ruined City of Arah in search of shards of the seer Bloodstone which the Six Gods had sundered there into five pieces in 0 AE. In 1329 AE, Historian Tranton uncovered the secrets of the Shadowstone which the Priory had found during their expeditions.
The Valley of Agony in Mistburned Barrens, located in the outskirts of the ruined Bava Nisos, ended up being filled with agitated Seer ghosts originating from the ancient battle between mursaat and Seers.

Notes[edit]
- The name Seer has been written with both uppercase and lowercase letters when referring to the race. The uppercase uses have been the vast majority in game and in out of game developer blogs prior to Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity which has preferred using lowercase instead.
- Several aspects of the Mordrem boss Stavemaster Adryn's design are reminiscent of the seers, such as the two additional arms folded over the chest. A concept art piece for the boss by Carlyn Lim was titled "NIGHTMARE COURT COMMANDER - SEER", suggesting that the similarities are intentional and also implying the existence of a connection between the Mordrem Guard and the Nightmare Court that evidently did not make it into the final cut of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns.
