Walkthrough[edit]

Storyline (interface).png Meet at the gates of Bava Nisos.

  • After a brief conversation through Comms Device with Anise and Isgarren, head to Point of interest (map icon).png The Gilded Approach in Mistburned Barrens and enter the first story instance "Forced Entry: Bava Nisos Outskirts".
  • Once the opening cutscene is finished, a dialogue open will appear, asking you to pick a side agree with Livia to use the power of the Scepter of Orr or side with the wizards who deem the artifact too dangerous. In the end, the choice is of little consequence — you will have to fight off a Mistburned ambush, during which Livia abandons the party in order to use the scepter on the gates to the city with the goal to open the pathway to the city. Dealing with the enemies quickly is necessary for an achievement.
  • After a brief dialogue, step into the portal to be transported to the next instance: "Forced Entry: Bava Nisos".

Storyline (interface).png Follow Livia into Bava Nisos.

Achievements[edit]

  • Succeed in defending against the Mistburned ambush within the time limit, occurs near the beginning of the story after the initial dialogue upon approaching Livia with the scepter.
    • The time limit is 3 minutes.
  • Eligibility is tracked by the effect Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: Efficient Defender.
Fact Finder map with the 10 objects
  • Locate all of the clues hidden around the abandoned White Mantle camp.
  • Interact with all the objects scattered around the camp in Mantle's Arrival during the "Forced Entry: Bava Nisos" instance.
    • The list of objects involved in this achievement is the same as the list of Objects below.
    • Make sure to grab the non-story items first, as you are otherwise locked out of the achievement until the chapter is replayed.[verification requested]
  • Eligibility is tracked by the effect Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: Fact Finder.
  • Interact with and exhaust the optional dialogue with all seven of your allies: Anise, Bengt Tovasson, Councillor Ludo, Isgarren, Livia, Poised Arrow and Waiting Sorrow. This needs to be done before the mission is completed.
    • Make sure to speak to Livia last, as one of her dialogue options completes the mission. Also, make sure to select the "And you? Are you prepared for what's next?" (the first dialogue), as selecting the "I think I've seen and heard enough. What's next?" option completes the mission.
    • Bengt Tovasson and Councillor Ludo has two dialogue options, and needs to be spoken to twice to gain progress in the achievement.
  • Eligibility is tracked by the effect Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: Diplomatic Relations.
  • Complete the story chapter Forced Entry.

Dialogue[edit]

On opening the chapter
Anise: Commander, we need you at the gates of Bava Nisos. Immediately. There's a situation—
Isgarren: A breach of promise! A blatant disregard of trust!
<Character name>: What happened?
Anise: Livia happened. She took the scepter
Isgarren: Stole.
Anise: We're headed there now. Hopefully, not too late...
<Character name>: I'm on my way.

Bava Nisos Outskirts instance[edit]

Cutscene at the beginning of the instance
Waiting Sorrow: We don't know the repercussions. Besides, we haven't exhausted all our options.
Livia: My patience is exhausted. Anise, you've searched this isle up and down. Think of the repercussions if we don't act soon.
Anise: I resent you putting me in this position.
Livia: I'm moving us toward a solution. One we already have. It's been in your hands from the start.
Isgarren: Rather curious that it's found its way back to your hands. Anise is wise not to take a thief at her word.
Anise: Let's not—
Livia: Difficult to steal what already belongs to you.
Waiting Sorrow: Legavo "belongs" to no one. Trying to control it is a sure path to it controlling you.
Livia: Quaint of you to assume me incapable of handling great power. Not that you would know anything about that...
Anise: Livia—
Poised Arrow: Uncalled for! Cheap shots won't win you any favor.
Anise: Quiet, all of you! Can't hear myself think...
After the cutscene ended
Poised Arrow: Ah, a voice of reason arrives! Wayfinder, talk some sense into them.
Poised Arrow: Talk some sense into them, Wayfinder! Make them see reason.
Talk quest choice tango.png Agree with Livia's plan to use the scepter.
<Character name>: Livia has a point. We're dealing with a Mists gate and a titan, exactly what the scepter was created for.
Anise: You're not wrong...
Livia: The commander knows the value of taking the bold approach.
Isgarren: Please. The moment the word "titan" was uttered, she burst into our council, jumping at any excuse to use the scepter.
Isgarren: If this were a skritt infestation, it would be her first choice of action!
Livia: Don't act like you're some pillar of morality.
Talk quest choice tango.png Side with the wizards. The scepter is too dangerous.
<Character name>: Waiting Sorrow has a point. The last guy who thought fondly of using that scepter sunk a continent.
Anise: My fears exactly...
Livia: Choosing the cautious route. Rather unlike you to sit by as the world crumbles, Commander.
Waiting Sorrow: If we did things your way, we'd just be expediting the process!
Getting ambushed by Mistburned
<Character name>: Mistburned!
Poised Arrow: Fight now, argue later!
When the second wave spawns (at 20% Mistburned Defeated)
Poised Arrow: More of them!
Isgarren: The scepter is likely attracting them!
Waiting Sorrow: Look what you've done, brandishing that scepter around like a toy!
Livia: Right, why don't we just blast that Heart of yours at everything we come across!
Anise: Enough! Focus!
When Livia runs towards Bava Nisos, and the third wave spawns (at about 50% Mistburned Defeated)
Livia: That's it, I'm done wasting time. Just have to handle this myself.
After defeating the ambush
Anise: Where...is Livia?
Poised Arrow: She's right here— Err, she was...
Isgarren: That imbecile!
Waiting Sorrow: The gate! We need to stop her.
Approaching Livia at the gate to Bava Nisos
Anise: Livia, stop! Its power, we don't—
Livia: Trust it, Anise. Trust me.
Poised Arrow: What's happening?
After Livia disappears through the portal
Poised Arrow: She...did it! Didn't she?
Waiting Sorrow: So she did.
Anise: Looks like the magic that was keeping us out has become some sort of portal. Is it safe for us to use?
Waiting Sorrow: Seems so. Ren?
Isgarren: For our use, yes, it is safe. As for Livia, I'm not sure she's prepared for the toll the scepter will take on her.
Isgarren: That, however, is her problem. For now.
<Character name>: What are we waiting for?

Bava Nisos instance[edit]

Opening cutscene when joining the instance
Poised Arrow: What am I looking at?
Anise: "What's left."
Waiting Sorrow: Bava Nisos...is the titan...or vice versa... The other three did seem to meld with their environments.
Isgarren: Given how much time has passed, it appears the titan and the city have become one and the same.
Isgarren: Mabon, what exactly were you planning to do about this?
Anise: Livia! She's being attacked!
Reaching Livia
Livia: So you decided to do things my way after all. Knew a little assertive action would help you see reason.
Waiting Sorrow: That's your takeaway— Never mind, let's just get rid of these things.
At 50% titan defenses remaining
Livia: For mindless pests, these things are surprisingly well coordinated with each other.
<Character name>: If we've learned anything here, it's don't underestimate the enemy.
Poised Arrow: Are they guards or something? Seems like they're defending the city.
Isgarren: Perhaps. In a sense...
Waiting Sorrow: Or maybe they're defending the body...
Isgarren: What is an army if not a society's immune system?
Gathering with your allies after the battle
<Character name>: Looks like they're handled. For now.
Waiting Sorrow: Ren, that immune system theory, I think there's something to it.
Isgarren: It would fit, given their nature as we've seen it. Though heterogeneous, they appear to be acting as part of a whole.
Isgarren: We've seen the titanspawn exhibit coordinated behavior. This suggests the same, given the scale of time and complexity.
Waiting Sorrow: I'm sure they'll only get meaner the further we push into the "city." We need to choose our actions deliberately.
Poised Arrow: That goes double for you—
Livia: What is a camp doing here of all places?
Waiting Sorrow: Don't try to distact—
Poised Arrow: She's right. Look!
Anise: How was this not destroyed in the wreckage? Unless...this came after the fall...
<Character name>: Only one way to know for sure.
Livia: Of course. Where chaos flourishes, the White Mantle are never far behind.
Anise: So they did make it to Bava Nisos. And not all that long ago, from the looks of it. Were they the ones behind all this?
Isgarren: We can't say for sure yet. But I do agree: their presence was relatively recent, and is, generally, rather damning.
<Character name>: Come to think of it, I found some White Mantle journals a while back. They did mention making it to the isles eventually. (If having completed Reading Between the Lines)
<Character name>: Why don't you start by searching the perimeter? I'll have a look around the camp.
Reading the Journals in the back (Judge's Diary Page 1)
<Character name>: Journals? Not quite... They almost sound more like prayers...
Reading the Diary Page by the flag (Judge's Diary Page 2)
<Character name>: Things were really not going well for them. Wonder what that city has in store for us.
Reading the Diary Page by the southern hut (Judge's Diary Page 3)
<Character name>: They really believed themselves the righteous ones until the very end. Tragic.
Reading the Scrawled Note (Judge's Diary Page 4)
<Character name>: Was he...losing his mind? Or was the voice real? And if so, could it have been...? I wonder...
Reading the Scroll by the northern table (Judge's Diary Page 5)
<Character name>: So it must've been them who opened the gate. Or at least, one acting alone. What became of them?
Examining the Drawing
<Character name>: Three titans. Three White Mantle. Can it really be that simple?
Examining the White Mantle Bow
This bow appears to have been brought by one of the White Mantle. From the wear marks on the grip and the arrow shelf, you can tell it has seen a good amount of use.
Talk end option tango.png Leave the bow alone.
Examining the Barrel of Documents
This barrel has been stuffed full of rolled-up documents, both new and old. There's no discernible order to the documents and no consistent subject, save for White Mantle involvement.
Talk end option tango.png Why'd they bring all of this with them?
Examining the Alchemical Scales
These alchemical scales appear to have been used extensively. The notes nearby suggest the White Mantle were attempting to find a way to protect themselves against Mistburn.
Talk end option tango.png They weren't completely mad, at least.
Examining the Map of Janthir
This hand-drawn map is marked with copious notes and diagrams, showing the White Mantle's journeys across Janthir and finally into Bava Nisos.
Talk end option tango.png Their journey was not easy. They were dedicated.
After having gathered information by interacting with all required items
<Character name>: The others need to hear this.
Approaching the team
<Character name>: I found some interesting—
Livia: Centuries of meddling and you'd think they'd develop some self-awareness!
Waiting Sorrow: You're one to talk.
Livia: Excuse me? None of you were getting anywhere until I took action. You'd still be standing around with your thumbs up your—
Anise: You know, Livia, you're right. You took plenty of action: abandoned us in battle, put our lives at stake...
Anise: Sure, you could've killed us, along with half of Tyria. But I'm getting the impression you really don't give a damn!
Waiting Sorrow: (gasps)
Anise: I'm tired of arguing. Gods know you won't listen to anyone but yourself. You've already made that perfectly clear.
Anise: Take whatever the hell "action" you want. And while you're at it, you can shove that scepter up your—
Isgarren: Countess—
Anise: Go on. You have my blessing. Not that it means anything to you.
Livia: Anise—
Poised Arrow: You heard her!
Waiting Sorrow: Livia, if you sink this city, you better pray that scepter takes you with it.
Livia: Deal.
Talking to Waiting Sorrow
Goodness, Wayfinder, that Livia woman would drive even the most sober bearkin to the honey wine. She could leech even Alder's stoicism...
Talk quest option tango.png It takes centuries to carve out a personality like that.
Hey, don't blame it on age. Not all of us end up that...grating. Then again, she does remind me of Ren in some ways... Maybe you're on to something.
Talk end option tango.png The best we can do right now is stay focused.
Talk end option tango.png She can be...a lot. Let's chat about this later.
Talking to Anise
I...don't mean to be curt, Commander, but I could really use a moment to myself.
Talk quest option tango.png Understood. I'll leave you to it, Countess.
Talk end option tango.png Perhaps another time.
Talking to Isgarren
Wayfinder, I'm afraid there is not much more to say. Whether we like it or not, Livia has acted, for all of us. The path before us is clear, even if it's not the one we would have chosen.
Talk quest option tango.png Do you think Livia could be right?
Perhaps we may find that to be true, when all is said and done. That doesn't mean I can easily forget. Or forgive. She will answer for her actions, that much I can guarantee.
Talk end option tango.png I guess we'll see how things shake out.
Talk end option tango.png Perhaps another time.
Talking to Poised Arrow
We lowlanders can get heated with each other at times, but...these wizards give me a headache. Are they always like this?
Talk quest option tango.png Well... Not quite like this, no. How're you holding up?
Fine. Just need to smooth my tufts. Seeing friends argue always makes me uncomfortable, 'specially when I'm not sure how to help. I'm sure things'll work out though, once nerves are calmed.
Talk end option tango.png I bet you're right. Hang in there.
Talk end option tango.png Me too, Poky. Me too...
Talking to Bengt Tovasson
Ah, Wayfinder. Should have known someone with your reputation would be in the vanguard. Ludo and I are here to help Lady Livia with her...mission.
Talk quest option tango.png Are you here with the Alliance, or...
Bengt Tovasson: In a sense, but say, you must be the commander!
Bengt Tovasson: Between Anise and Kasmeer, I've heard enough gossip over the past decade to spot you in any crowd. Largely good things, mind you.
Bengt Tovasson: But where are my manners? Bengt Tovasson, Fourth Veil of the Mesmer Collective.
Bengt Tovasson: We'll be seeing more of each other soon, I suspect. Don't need Raven's foresight to know that. (chuckles)
Talk quest option tango.png Did the countess ask you here?
Bengt Tovasson: She did. I have some personal stake in seeing Mabon's legacy upheld, even if that means bearing some of his burdens.
Bengt Tovasson: That said...I expect I'll be asked to keep a third eye on the Lady Livia and that scepter of hers.
Bengt Tovasson: Never a dull moment, hm?
Talk end option tango.png I'll leave you to your preparations.
Talking to Councillor Ludo
Commander Wayfinder. Good to see you again, even though I may wish the meeting could have been under better circumstances.
Talk quest option tango.png Councillor, you're here in person?
Councillor Ludo: Contrary to expectation, some on the Arcane Council don't mind getting their mitts dirty now and again.
Councillor Ludo: You may recall that I backed her during the scepter vote. Recent actions aside...
Councillor Ludo: Never mind that I have a vested interest in Lady Livia's success.
Councillor Ludo: It would reflect poorly on me and my percipience were she to fail in her mission.
Talk quest option tango.png How will you be assisting the alliance?
Councillor Ludo: All in due time. For now, Countess Anise wants to get the Fourth Veil and I up to speed on operations.
Councillor Ludo: That means bouncing back and forth between here and the staging camp in the barrens.
Councillor Ludo: Eventually, one can extrapolate that it will lead to us joining Livia's push into Bava Nisos proper.
Councillor Ludo: An electrifying prospect, is it not?
Talk end option tango.png Best of luck out there, Councillor.
Talking to Livia
Commander. I hope you're in a better frame of mind than the countess, or the others... We've got work to do and no time for petty disagreements.
Talk quest option tango.png And you? Are you prepared for what's next?
Livia: I'm ready when you are. We'll give the others time to parse through your White Mantle findings.
Livia: And cool their tempers.
<Character name>: I've never seen the countess have an outburst like that before. You struck a nerve.
Livia: Oh, please. That one's always had a temper. As a girl, she broke a kid's nose after he dipped Jennah's braid in quill ink.
Livia: She hit hard, too! Never thought he'd stop crying. Unfortunately, he was the baron's kid. That took awhile to smooth over.
Livia: She's got the will of a dolyak. And the stubbornness. Makes her good at what she does. Hard not to have faith in her.
Livia: Sometimes, she just needs a nudge to give her momentum. That's all I'm trying to do. Not sure if she sees it that way...
Talk story option.png I think I've seen and heard enough. What's next? (Completes the instance)
Livia: Looks like it's just us for now, Commander. I'm in agreement on this whole immune system theory.
Livia: If we can knock out parts of the whole, we'll have the advantage. The body is an interconnected system, after all.
Livia: As for the Mists gate, it's sure to be heavily protected. Some simple divide and conquer, and we'll have our in.
Talk end option tango.png Let me check in with the others first.
Talking to Illuminate Katla
Wayfinder...what happened? Livia summoned me and Sunrise to the Alliance Staging Ground, but when we got there, she was nowhere to be found. Then we returned to the gate...and found a portal!
Talk more option tango.png It was a ruse. She used Legavo to open the way.
She used... Oh, Isgarren is going to flay her alive! Of all the stupid, reckless... (sighs) Still, it seems clear that she puzzled out the riddle I couldn't solve.
Talk end option tango.png I'm sure there will be repercussions.
Talk end option tango.png I've got to secure the area.

My story[edit]

Penance for the Past loading screen (Mabon's Grief).png

After our previous efforts left us standing outside the locked gates of Bava Nisos, it was clear we needed a new strategy. Something deliberate and well thought out to achieve our goal. What we've gotten is the exact opposite, at least based on Anise's most recent call. Fed up with the pace of our progress, Livia has now decided to barrel straight into Bava Nisos armed with the Scepter of Orr. As her colleague, I'd call her decision both inconsiderate and reckless. As someone aware of the Scepter's fraught past, I'd call it potentially catastrophic. And that's not even getting into the politics of her acting directly in contradiction of the Tyrian Alliance's vote. For now, I will be making my way to the city, hopefully to stop this situation from spiraling into an even greater mess.

***

I arrived at Bava Nisos and had no trouble locating my allies due to the heated argument in progress. Isgarren and Waiting Sorrow were vehemently opposing Livia's brash approach. Poised Arrow was in over his head trying to mediate the situation. All the while, Anise was trying to weigh the options on the table. And she was understandably stressed.

Upon my arrival, Poky asked that I talk some sense into everyone. I did what I could, plainly stating my stance, but it did little to calm the situation. But before anything resembling a decision could be reached, we were ambushed by a wave of Mistburned. They surrounded us, likely summoned by the Scepter of Orr as a side effect of Livia's heightened emotional state. We fought back, but at some point in the midst of the chaos, Livia managed to slip away. There was no question: she was on her way to open the gate, discussion be damned. With the Mistburned cleared out, we pursued Livia before she could cause irreparable damage to herself, to us, or to Tyria as a whole.

***

Little to our surprise, we caught up with Livia just as she was using the Scepter of Orr to punch a hole in the arcane seal guarding the city. Fortunately, no apparent calamities have come of her actions...so far. The wizards presumed this newly opened entrance safe, so we took the chance and pushed onward into Bava Nisos. However, the "city" we expected to be a mere pile of rubble turned out to be something far more sinister: a colossal titan! It seemed that the titan had existed in the city for so long that it had melded with the ruins, each indistinguishable from the other. At least, that was Isgarren's theory.

We had little time to take in the magnitude of our surroundings as we tailed Livia. We quickly found her engaged in combat with a group of titanspawn acting in an unusually coordinated effort. We provided her backup, eventually warding off the spawn. With the enemy defeated, Isgarren mulled over their heightened behavior, believing the titanspawn's increased cooperation to be a sort of immune-system response to protect the titan.

Though the party was more than ready to air their frustrations at Livia, they would have to wait yet again as we stumbled upon a nearby ruined camp. After a bit of snooping, we gathered that the camp appeared to have belonged to a trio of White Mantle, originally sent here on Caudecus's behalf. I investigated further, looking through the debris and abandoned personal effects to try to piece together their story. I uncovered some bizarre journal entries belonging to the White Mantle's youngest member, Judge. At first, I thought they were diary entries written in the form of some sort of poetry or prayer, and I assumed the kid had a bit of an artistic streak in him. But upon closer inspection, the writings appeared increasingly more deranged. Even more disturbing, they seemed to imply that a voice (maybe real, maybe imagined) kept beckoning to him in the night. From his descriptions, the whispers sounded like instructions to open the Mists gate. Given Judge's mental state, they may not be the most objective form of evidence. However, if true, they place responsibility squarely on the White Mantle for opening the Mists gate.

I regrouped with the party in an attempt to relay the news. Instead, I walked smack dab into the middle of an even more heated argument than the first. This time, Anise's stress levels had hit a boiling point. She made her sentiments very clear to Livia, to put it mildly. The argument eventually came to a head, leaving team morale at an all-time low. Since no one else was in any mood to collaborate with Livia, I agreed to partner with her to push farther into the city. The others would remain together, surveying the rest of the area. The strategy would be to keep the group intact while everyone calms down. And me keeping an eye on Livia certainly doesn't hurt matters.

My story

Notes[edit]

Many papers scattered around the abandoned White Mantle camp are obscured with strange markings. New Krytan text says: "The Rise of -"
  • Drawing object in the abandoned camp consists of several scattered pieces of paper. A closer investigation allows a player to notice a few readable highlights written in New Krytan language, as well as multiple scratch marks obscuring some of the text on each page. Among the notes there are three clearly visible pages speaking of "Bloodstone Invocation", "Nightfall" and "Wrath of the Titans". Two of the notes are partially unreadable due to the strange markings, with the only readable parts being: "White Mantle -" and "The rise of -". Further inspection reveals the missing words to be "conspiracy" and "Orr" respectively, making the full texts say "White Mantle Conspiracy" and "The rise of Orr".
