Achievements[edit]

  • Complete the mission.
  • Achievement qualification can be tracked via the effect Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: Field Updates.
  • Speak with Poised Arrow, Isgarren, and Countess Anise in the first instance during the "Check in with Researcher Rin" objective.
    • All three can be found in the same area as the previous objective.
    • Each conversation counts as a separate objective, meaning not all conversations need to be heard in the same attempt at the mission.
  • Achievement qualification can be tracked via the effect Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: Conqueror of the Lake.
  • Defeat the Elite Ruinshard Scuttler without being downed.
    • It's not necessary to defeat the Titanspawn broodlings without being downed, as long as the Elite Ruinshard Scuttler is defeated beforehand.
Once golden now tarnished.png
  • Achievement qualification can be tracked via the effect Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: Once Golden, Now Tarnished.
  • The achievement can still be completed, even if the achievement qualification effect disappears (such as by dying to fall damage).
  • Available after the final objective ("Head into the chamber") has been completed and after interacting with the nearby Tattered Letter, but before the instance has been exited.
  • Gained by interacting first with the Peculiar Bush, located directly west of the Point of interest (map icon).png Lakeside Watch, and then with the Lover's Wall southeast of the bush and just southwest of the final cave.
    • Both of these locations are marked on the minimap with green circles.
    • Two Golden Lake Spirits are spawned after the ring is placed at the wall.
  • Only the instance at the Lake needs to be completed for the achievement to progress.

Dialogue[edit]

Alliance Staging Ground instance[edit]

Meeting your allies
Countess Anise: Commander. Last we spoke, you left me on quite the cliffhanger.
<Character name>: Didn't mean to cause alarm. I had just caught sight of some glowing wisp. Upon closer inspection, it was...
Isgarren: Mabon. Preserved in memory. From his return in the wake of Bava Nisos's destruction. Of that much, I am certain.
Waiting Sorrow: (sighs)
Countess Anise: I expected this area to draw out some ghosts of the past, but this...
Poised Arrow: Not just one, either. We were ambushed by a whole army. One even knows Isgarren.
Isgarren: Knew. Yagon. A vile scourge even among the mursaat. She'll be dealt with.
Countess Anise: Not much for peace of mind, but I'll take your word for it. As for Mabon...
Waiting Sorrow: We should retrace his path. The city's sealed, regardless. Why not look into it while we have the chance.
Isgarren: Then it's settled. Let's see what other secrets Mabon has left behind.
Talking to Anise
Countess Anise: Ready to go, Commander? On your way out, you'll pass Researcher Rin. She'll point you in the right direction.
Waiting Sorrow: And Commander, if you find anything noteworthy, check in over comms. Best to stay in contact in a place like this.
Optional dialogue with Poised Arrow and Waiting Sorrow
Poised Arrow: So... Mabon was a friend of yours?
Waiting Sorrow: Yes. He was a member of the Wizard's Court with me. And a very talented mesmer. One of the best I've encountered.
Poised Arrow: He seemed pretty upset at his people... And himself?
Waiting Sorrow: He was from an ancient race with a complex history. The mursaat. They were often at war. With a dragon, with the seers...
Waiting Sorrow: Isgarren's people.
Poised Arrow: Ah.
Isgarren: (scoffs)
Waiting Sorrow: Then, for a while, they were trying to keep a door closed. A door to another world. To keep the strangers out of Tyria.
Waiting Sorrow: But they went about it in an...extreme way. Killed a lot of innocent people. And in the end, the strangers won anyway.
Waiting Sorrow: And they wiped out the mursaat entirely. Except for Mabon. He'd seen the error of their ways long before then.
Poised Arrow: I see why he was stressed... Seems like a pretty impressive guy, though...
Waiting Sorrow: He was.
Optional dialogue with Isgarren
Isgarren: Yagon is an old rival from the height of the seer-mursaat war. Thought herself my equal. I begged to differ.
Isgarren: And yes, I killed her myself. It was...thorough. That's as much as I'll speak on the matter.
Isgarren: War in those days was not for the timid. Makes modern battle look like a child's game... Regardless, not my proudest moment.
Isgarren: But I did what was called for. Especially after what she created.... Everyone that she killed.
Isgarren: The world is better off without her. I stand by that. If only the old crone had stayed dead.
Optional dialogue with Countess Anise
Countess Anise: The alliance has been up in arms on how to handle the situation. A new layer of complications is not what we needed.
Countess Anise: Ludo and Lady Livia are especially riled. They're pushing for stronger action over research.
Countess Anise: What that "stronger action" would amount to? Frankly, I'm not sure we're ready to see the consequences.
Countess Anise: And now, Mabon's here... If only in spirit... Still, I hope he can provide some guidance. We could certainly use it.
Countess Anise: I normally don't envy your work, Commander, but from where I'm standing, I wouldn't mind trading places for a time.
Checking in with Researcher Rin
Researcher Rin: Wayfinder. You seem focused, so I won't keep you. Anise said you're off to explore another section of the isle.
Researcher Rin: Based on my research, some of the mursaat's more...infamous figures made their mark in the isle's southernmost region.
Researcher Rin: Humbly, I'd suggest starting there. But beware: memories of the past fade far sooner than the scars they leave behind.

Mistburned Barrens[edit]

Finding Mabon's memory wisp
<Character name>: Wisp spotted. It's hovering near a bloodstone.
Waiting Sorrow: You could try the Heart of the Obscure again.
<Character name>: That didn't work out so well last time...
Waiting Sorrow: Hear me out—given their proximity to the city, these shards were likely drained long ago.
Waiting Sorrow: Between the titans and the mursaat exhausting them, it's unlikely they're volatile. Hopefully...
Neutralizing the bloodstone using the Heart of the Obscure
<Character name>: A letter? Unexpected, but better than the alternative...
Reading the Bloodstone Letter
<Character name>: You were right. The Heart didn't cause an explosion. But it did yield...a letter.
Waiting Sorrow: What?
<Character name>: To Manikaz. Sounds like the mursaat ramped up their sacrifices right before the Door of Komalie opened.
Waiting Sorrow: Plenty of good that did them. Well, I'd keep watch for more wisps. Trust Mabon to guide you.
One of the following when approaching the second, third and fourth bloodstone shards
<Character name>: Should get a closer look.
<Character name>: Could be something...
<Character name>: Over there.. Could it be...
<Character name>: What's that ahead?
<Character name>: Think I see something.
Neutralizing the second bloodstone
Mursaat Ghost: No! I beg you! Please, I can't take any more...
<Character name>: I won't hurt you. I—
Mursaat Ghost: I won't fall for that!
Mursaat Ghost: NO! STOP! Manikaz, please!
Mursaat Ghost: (sobs quietly)
<Character name>: Who would enjoy this? No wonder Mabon felt conflicted...
<Character name>: You bear no resemblance to such monsters, Mabon.
Neutralizing the third bloodstone, uncovering the Bloodstone Book
<Character name>: Afraid to see what evil lurks in these pages. Mabon, what exactly are you trying to tell me?
Neutralizing the fourth bloodstone
Mursaat Ghost: (labored breathing)
<Character name>: It's all right. I'm here to help.
Mursaat Ghost: Too late...for help. He's gone. I'm not too far behind...
<Character name>: You saw Manikaz die?
Mursaat Ghost: Not dead, hiding. Fled to the Golden Lake. The city is falling....[sic] He's afraid.
<Character name>: He'll get what's coming to him.
Mursaat Ghost: You... The pain is gone. I don't understand how, but... Thank you.
<Character name>: He can't hurt you anymore. How do you know he's at the Golden Lake?
Mursaat Ghost: He speaks to himself. At first, I thought someone might be with him, out of sight...
Mursaat Ghost: But I soon realized he was arguing with himself. Occasionally, at first. And then, constantly.
<Character name>: Interesting... Well, you've earned some peace and quiet. Rest now.
After the ghost disappeared
<Character name>: I found a lead. Some of the bloodstone shards still had ghosts tethered to them, just like in Sanguine Crater.
<Character name>: Victims of Manikaz. Apparently, he hid at the Golden Lake as the city fell. I'm on my way now.
<Character name>: The wisp seems to be following Manikaz's route. Maybe Mabon was following his path of destruction.
Waiting Sorrow: That's as good of a lead as we've found so far. I'll bring backup. See you soon.

The Golden Lake instance[edit]

Upon entering the instance
<Character name>: It's almost serene, if you forget where you are.
After securing the area
<Character name>: More bloodstone. Looks substantial.
After neutralizing the bloodstone
Manikaz: (coughs) You think—you think this is the end?
Manikaz: I am the blood phenom. With this stone... I will outlast every one of you!
(Manikaz flees up the hill with someone unseen pursuing him.)
Manikaz: Stop, please! No! NO!
Manikaz: (screams)
If asura:
<Character name>: Alchemy...
If charr:
<Character name>: Burn me...
If human:
<Character name>: Gods...
If norn:
<Character name>: Spirits...
If sylvari:
<Character name>: Pale Mother...
After the Ruinshard Scuttler summons broodlings
Countess Anise: Commander! We came as quickly as we could—
One of:[verification requested]
<Character name>: Great. Now get in here!
<Character name>: Great. Now help!
<Character name>: Help!
After the Ruinshard Scuttler and the broodlings are killed
(The wisp appears again, moving east.)
<Character name>: Look.
<Character name>: There it goes.
Upon reaching Mabon inside the Hall of Passing
Mabon: Torn to shreds. Bleeding out, alone, in the dirt. I hope you felt every bit of it.
Mabon: In the name of each life you massacred, I hope you writhed beneath this future you so desperately feared.
Mabon: Still too merciful an end for you...
Mabon: At least whoever did you in made fine work of it.
(A rumbling noise can be heard.)
Mabon: Who's there?
(The wisp moves again, chasing someone unseen through the wall.)
After the vision
Countess Anise: His voice... I...
Waiting Sorrow: I know.
Isgarren: He was in pursuit of someone. And now, it appears we are as well.
Poised Arrow: Any idea who? Was there ever something he said...or did...?
Countess Anise: This is...something best discussed away from here. We could all use a moment to get our bearings.
<Character name>: If it's all the same to you, Anise, I'm going to stay out here a bit longer.
Countess Anise: Of course, Commander. Come see me when you're ready. In the meantime, some rest would do me well.

Digging at the Peculiar Bush
As you dig underneath the bush, you find a small golden ring wrapped in old cloth. You take it in your hand and swear you feel a loving warmth.
Talk end option tango.png Step away with the ring in hand.
Placing the ring at the Lover's Wall
As you place the ring in a crevice in the wall, you feel the mood of the area lighten. Suddenly, you swear you can hear footsteps.
Talk end option tango.png Step away from the wall.
(Two Golden Lake spirits, a man and a woman, appear and walk through the hole in the ruined wall before disappearing.)

My Story[edit]

Astral Ward Camp concept art.jpg

Our party regrouped at base to inform Anise of our unexpected reunion with friends and foes past. Our developments surprised her, to say the least, but it was the news of Mabon that hit hardest. Compounded by the Alliance's increasing impatience, I certainly don't envy the pressure Anise is under.

That being said, if any good came of Mabon's surprise appearance, it was to provide us some much-needed direction. We've decided our next best move is to try and retrace Mabon's steps. In following his path, we hope to gain some insight into what we might be overlooking. It may be a bit unconventional as far as leads go, but if Mabon left such memories behind, it was certainly for a reason. As I took my leave, I was advised by the Alliance's Researcher Rin to direct my search south. And that's just what I plan to do.

Venturing southward, I kept my eyes peeled for signs of Mabon's presence. And sure enough, not long into my search, I discovered a wisp hovering near some bloodstone. Unsure how exactly to proceed, I consulted Waiting Sorrow, who suggesting using the Heart of the Obscure on the bloodstone. Her advice was ... less reassuring than I would've liked. Still, I threw caution to the wind and gave it a go.

Surprisingly, the interaction yielded ... a letter. Odd, but preferable to a spectral ambush or an explosion. The letter spoke of Manikaz, the unhinged mursaat researcher whose ghost I had the displeasure of meeting in Sanguine Crater. Apparently, he and his lackeys increased bloodstone sacrifices just before the Door of Komalie was opened. More lives ended in vain.

I continued exploring, encountering a few more wisps here and there. All seemed to have anchored themselves near bloodstone shards scattered across the area. With some help from the Heart, I uncovered a historical text, and shockingly, the ghosts of two of Manikaz's victims. Judging by the deep-seated terror that haunted them even in death, I can only imagine what torture the "Blood Phenoms" subjected them to while they were still alive.

One of the victims provided me some extremely useful information. She pointed me in the direction of the Golden Lake. According to her, Manikaz hid there in his final days as the city fell. Now that I've gotten Waiting Sorrow up to speed, I'll be making my way there. Though I'm none too eager to run into the executioner himself.

***

Arriving at the Golden Lake, I was caught off guard by its strange serenity. Like the eye of a storm, if you forget the turmoil surrounding it, you could almost mistake it for peaceful. But the illusion was short-lived. Again, I used the Heart on a nearby bloodstone shard. This time, it brought to life memories of Manikaz's death. His dying shrieks echoed across time as he was torn asunder by his pursuer.

Not much later, I found myself staring down the very same fate. A titan champion, not in memory but in the flesh, appeared before me and began closing in.

Fortunately, backup arrived. Waiting Sorrow, Poised Arrow, Anise, and Isgarren sprang into action. With a coordinated effort, we beat back the beast. Curiously, this titan didn't seem to share any kind of resemblance with Ura, Decima, or Greer. I didn't want to jump to any conclusions, but the implications made me somewhat uneasy. There was little time to dwell on the matter. We'd barely beaten the thing into submission when a wisp made its appearance.

The wisp floated into a chamber in the ruins, as if goading us to follow it. Now accustomed to its game of hide-and- seek, we followed. When we reached the end of the chamber, it rewarded us with another of Mabon's memories. We looked on as Mabon visited the site of Manikaz's then-recent death. He cursed the corpse of Manikaz, damning his heinous acts. In the heat of his denouncement, he was interrupted by a new presence. He called out, and the vision ended with Mabon in pursuit of it. Shaken by these revelations, Anise especially so, we decided to regroup at base once we found our bearings. Who or what exactly Mabon was pursuing in his memory, I'm afraid we just might find out.
