The Realm of Torment, also called the Nightmare Realm,[1] is part of the Mists. It is a place where individuals of twisted evil or corruption are banished to spend eternity in torment, including the fallen god Abaddon who had been imprisoned there for centuries. Following Abaddon's demise, domains in the Realm of Torment have been claimed by his successor Kormir, most notably the Sanctum.

Getting there[edit]

The Realm of Torment is connected to Tyria via the Mouth of Torment in the Desolation and Bava Nisos in The Isles of Janthir. It is also one of the destinations that can be accessed through the Portal to the Mists in the Tomb of the Primeval Kings.

History[edit]

Early years[edit]

The Realm of Torment was the prison of the god Abaddon, imprisoned by the Five Gods of Tyria to prevent his influence from spreading throughout the world. His worshippers, including the Margonites, former humans turned into demons by Abaddon, and torment demons, were also imprisoned here some time later. Vizier Khilbron and Shiro Tagachi were also imprisoned here.

However, over time, Abaddon and other corrupted souls took control of the place, to the point that the god's minions began attacking the Forgotten guardians. As his madness and power intensified, the souls of innocents were also sent to this realm to prevent his power from spreading throughout the Mists. As Abaddon moves toward the Nightfall, the Realm of Torment and the world of the living draw ever closer, until parts of both begin to intertwine as the fabric of reality weakens.

However, a group of Heroes along with Kormir entered the realm from the Mouth of Torment in the Desolation to stop and thwart his plans. By killing the god Abaddon, Kormir ascended as the goddess of order, spirit, and truth. Afterward, a battle took place here against The Fury and Mallyx the Unyielding.

Over time, Kormir reclaimed the site to establish Sanctum.

Living World Season 3

In recent times, Minister Caudecus sent a group of White Mantle members led by Judge, Tatyanna, and Ulrich to The Isles Janthir to uncover the mysteries hidden within the mursaat city of Bava Nisos. However, they encountered a Titan, Saevus Saxum, who manipulated them into entering the portal to the mists and reaching the Foundry of Failed Creations. Upon entering the foundry, the three became trapped within the realm. Their souls fused with demonic entities that distorted their minds, allowing the now-maddened three to create the Titans Greer, Decima, and Ura, who reflected twisted versions of their personalities. The tormented White Mantle would remain at the foundry to keep it active while the titans entered Tyria to spread corruption throughout Janthir and create their respective titanspawn to bolster their ranks.

Path of Fire

In 1330 AE, Balthazar's Forged army gathered in the Realm of Torment. Portals appeared in the Maws to send reinforcements through to Tyria to assist in Balthazar's hunt for the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik in the Crystal Desert.[2] The Order of Shadows conducted operations throughout the Ruptured Heart to shut down these portals in a constant tug-of-war with the Forged.

Janthir Wilds

In 1338 AE, a strike team including the Pact Commander, Countess Anise, Isgarren, Livia, Poised Arrow, and Waiting Sorrow entered the foundry after receiving information from Mabon's ghost on how to end the titan threat. The team soon located the tormented White Mantle trio who sensed the Scepter of Orr that Livia was carrying and demanded she give it to them. When the team refused, the White Mantle attacked them one by one, proving to be formidable foes in combat. After each tormented soul had been weakened enough to make them vulnerable, the Commander used the Heart of the Obscure in tandem with a touchstone related to the respective spirit's personal keepsake to channel the touchstones into their souls and then exorcise each soul from the Mists. The trio's banishment and Mabon subsequently sealing the Mists Gate by remaining on the other side with the Scepter of Orr ended the titan threat by severing access to the foundry.

Trivia[edit]

Gwwlogo.png The Guild Wars Wiki has an article on Realm of Torment.
  • Information in gw.dat (the data file for Guild Wars) suggested that the Realm of Torment had been renamed to the Redeemed Realm after Kormir's ascension. However, there has never been any canon reference to the Redeemed Realm to confirm that this is the case.[3]
  • The Realm of Torment features in phrases used by some Tyrians to express annoyance.[4]
