Yagon using the shadowcraft skill.[1] |
“You can banish me, but not my gift. My gift to this world is eternal. When all the world is quiet, the choir will continue its everlasting lament.
— Yagon
Yagon is a mursaat ghost. In life, she was Isgarren's rival and the creator of Spectral Agony that caused the Seers' downfall. She was responsible for the death of Sidony, the leader of the Seers, and was herself felled by Isgarren.
| Yagon has managed to survive her fall due to the effects of the bloodstone and continues haunting the Mistburned Barrens which still suffer the lingering effects of Spectral Agony. Upon sensing Isgarren's return to the region, she arrives to enact her greater plans to spread the agony farther and make the last Seer, her nemesis, suffer. Thanks to the Pact Commander's use of the Heart of the Obscure, however, Yagon is finally slain for good although not before taunting the party with the unknown dangers lurking deep inside the fallen mursaat city of Bava Nisos. |
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Yagon was a gifted mursaat researcher and mage who participated in the millennia-spanning Seer-mursaat war. According to the Seer Isgarren, Yagon was vile even by mursaat standards. She had a mate, Arch Steward Celsa.[2] The mursaat witch successfully assassinated the Seer leader Sidony while luring the attacking Seers into a trap in the Valley of Agony in Mistburned Barrens where she unleashed her greatest invention, Spectral Agony which she considered her gift to Tyria, on them. This assault effectively ended the war in the mursaat's favor as the few remaining Seer survivors could not challenge the might of the entire mursaat army directly afterwards.[3] The mursaat city of Bava Nisos was built near the site of Yagon's triumph, while the valley remained steeped in endless agony of the tormented Seer ghosts for millennia as Yagon wanted them to suffer for eternity.[4]
Isgarren, despite having been exiled by Sidony before the fateful attack, still chose to avenge his kin's fate. He gained passage into Bava Nisos undetected and killed Yagon in broad daylight in revenge. Yagon was among her peers and family, and the assassination was executed at the height of preparations for the Ceremony of the Rabbit's Moon, catching the mursaat unaware.[2] A Ceremony of Passing was held by Yagon's mate Celsa in the late mursaat mage's memory two days later at the Golden Lake, and all mursaat were forbidden to speak for the duration of the following sunrise until sundown.[3] Celsa issued an order to bring Isgarren back alive if possible as mursaat tradition dictated that the final life-breath of the enemy should be gifted to the mate of the victim.[2] However, Isgarren remained elusive, and Celsa could not avenge Yagon before most of the mursaat fell to the titans and the Chosen heroes centuries later.
Janthir Wilds[edit]
Unbeknownst to Isgarren, Yagon had managed to linger on as a spirit tied to the bloodstones which the mursaat had experimented on. Some time after the fall of Isgarren's mursaat ally Mabon, the wards Mabon had placed around the isle containing Bava Nisos and Mistburned Barrens fell, allowing interlopers to enter the desecrated grounds after centuries of isolation. Mabon's lingering memory also sought out the Janthir region in wisp form, eventually guiding the Pact Commander and their allies, including Isgarren, to retrace the path he had once taken. This path led to the party confronting Yagon who, unlike many mursaat bloodstone ghosts, was not oblivious to her surroundings but very aware of everything happening around her. She sent mursaat ghosts to swarm the party and also taunted Isgarren by revealing how ruthlessly the Seer had murdered her in front of her family as she attempted to sow seeds of discord among Isgarren's allies. The party was able to thwart the ghost onslaught while Isgarren fought Yagon on the cliffs before the mursaat witch escaped.[5]
After surviving the ambush, the Commander continued exploring the barrens and followed the vision of Mabon around while neutralizing the smaller bloodstones along the way. During this time, the Commander also aided the Astral Ward team headed by the djinn Alya and the sylvari Head Researcher Rhianwyn in exploring the Valley of Agony and trying to neutralize the Spectral Agony there. However, the agony was resistant to these attempts even if it could be dissipated for a while. During one of these excursions the explorers came across Yagon herself as she possessed a jade construct in an attempt to slay the party and add them to her chorus of torment. The Ward ultimately managed to banish Yagon although it would only give them a temporary reprieve as the mursaat witch would eventually return to continue her experiments.[4]
Following Mabon's trace led the Commander and the rest of their party—including Isgarren, and the kodan pair Poised Arrow and Waiting Sorrow—to the very gates of Bava Nisos itself. Yagon interrupted the reunion as she returned to taunt Isgarren; tensions between her and the Seer came to a head when she accused the late Mabon of cowardice upon his demise which had occurred a year earlier. She once again showed her awareness of her surroundings as she disparagingly called out each member of Isgarren's party in turn, even recognizing the Commander as a champion of an Elder Dragon. Infuriated by her callous words, the party fought the wicked remnant, while Isgarren made sure to point out that he would make sure that the world remembered Yagon as a vile coward. After Yagon had been sufficiently weakened, the Commander used Waiting Sorrow's invention, the Heart of the Obscure, to seal away what remained of the mursaat witch. As Yagon fell, she taunted the party by teasing the existence of unknown dangers still lurking deep inside Bava Nisos.[1]
