The seer vault, where Ancora is located. |
“Who are you? Do you deserve this? Do you wish to ascend?
— Ancora
Ancora is an ancient seer staff found inside the seer vault in Starlit Weald during the Path of Divinity chapter. It is used in the Rite of Divinity to ascend mortals into magically powerful beings, a process that has since inspired a lesser version of the ascension rite used by the Wizard's Court.
History[edit]
Early history[edit]
Ancora was an arcane staff empowered by the sacrificed essence of three powerful seer spellbinders who had crafted it at a specific location deeper in Castora which contained a well of immense power. The voices of the sacrificed spellbinders would speak as one through Ancora, questioning if the wielder of the staff was worthy of the power within.[1][2] Ancora was used by many seers to ascend themselves in the Rite of Divinity, or Divitium Nava. In cases like Isgarren the ritual was successful, but in cases like Lasia it resulted in a failure and slowly sapped away her lifeforce until her demise, which was poetically referred to as "falling on the doorstep of divinity."[3][4]
The seer doyen Sidony thought that Ancora's destruction would mark the seers' demise; otherwise, it would have been destroyed during the seer-mursaat war to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. As a compromise, Ancora was placed in a hidden vault warded by shadowstone, traps, and enchanted weapons acting as guardians. Because Isgarren had broken seer rules and ascended the non-seer Waiting Sorrow, Sidony cursed Isgarren to never be able to touch Ancora again and banished him from Castora, after which the doyen went to hide the staff in the vault.[5]
After Isgarren had founded the Wizard's Court, he used an Ancora-less version of the rite away from Castora to create a lesser version of the rite to ascend mortals into wizardhood so they could join his growing organization as Tyria's defenders.[6]
Visions of Eternity[edit]
Act 2[edit]
In 1338 AE, the Inquest voyaged to Castora to seek out Ancora which Director Vloxx hoped to use to ascend himself and gift power to Tyrians, while Isgarren, the Pact Commander, Rytlock Brimstone, and Sayida the Sly along with their allies tried to find and claim Ancora first so its power could not be abused. The staff nevertheless ended up in Vloxx's hands after an explosion set off by the Inquest had knocked down Isgarren's party and made the Commander lose their grip on Ancora. Vloxx disappeared into the forest along with his followers, set to find the location to perform the rite in.[2]

- Isgarren: Those who crafted Ancora sacrificed a piece of their essence to it. You are hearing all of them, all at once.
- Rytlock Brimstone: Sounds way too powerful to be tucked away on some island.
- Isgarren: Sidony thought its destruction would mark our demise. Otherwise, it would have been destroyed long ago. [...]
- Rytlock Brimstone: If Vloxx could perform the rite with just the staff, he'd have done it already. What else does he need?
- Isgarren: Deeper in the island, there's a well of immense power. It is where Ancora was crafted and where our rituals were performed.
- Isgarren: He must take Ancora to those grounds first if he wishes to perform the rite.

- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: The kodan Voice was not going to die. She was simply not ready to wield the power that stood before her.
- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: So, you gifted her ours. What logic guided you toward that choice?
- Echo of Isgarren: I saved her soul from Koda's claws.
- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: You mutilated our power to your will. Your turned the Rite of Divinity into a parlor trick.
- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: You betrayed us, Isgarren. And this is but the peak of your ever-building sedition. Time and time you chose yourself.
- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: Especially now, as the mursaat seek our blood... I cannot allow your negligence to flourish as war rages against us.
- Echo of Isgarren: Sidony, listen to reason. I have never stepped against you.
- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: You are too great a risk and must be struck from this place. You are not of my flock any longer.
- Echo of Isgarren: You need me.
- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: You are banished, Isgarren. Exiled from our people! No home. No belonging. No asylum.
- Echo of Sidony the Shadowkeeper: My seneschal will attack you. Your mind will fail you! If you touch Ancora again, your flesh will burn.

- <Character name>: This ritual, it's what you used for the Wizard's Court, isn't it?
- Isgarren: The rite I performed on my fellow wizards is a more subdued, precise version. But they are similar, yes.
- <Character name>: And this Ancora it mentions? You know what that is too, don't you? And where it is, I'm sure.
- Isgarren: It is the staff that the rite requires, an object of immeasurable power. And no, I have not located it yet.
