A hammer is a cruel instrument, but we would struggle to build without it. We just need to know when to put it down. I'm using an evil thing to do good and destroying the evil in the process.

Director Vloxx

Director Vloxx is the latest leader of the Inquest who has aspirations to ascend via seer rituals to gain power. He is distrustful of the Tyrian Alliance's motives and claims that the Inquest is a necessary evil to return control of Tyria's future to her people. He appears to hold the Pact Commander in high regard.

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Vloxx initially worked as a hydrological engineer in Rata Sum. He filed several official warnings about the structural integrity of the Magus Dam, but the Arcane Council dismissed the warnings and barred him from intervening before the dam collapsed. Disillusioned, Vloxx left Rata Sum and joined the Inquest after some time had passed. He served in various posts within the Inquest such as golemancer and lead field researcher while climbing the hierarchy prior to assuming directorship within the organization alongside other directors.[1][2]

As the Pact Commander and their allies defeated several notable Inquest members like Kudu over the years, Vloxx began paying attention to the Commander's actions. He learned at some point that the Commander had peered into what the asura believed to be the Eternal Alchemy via Omadd's Machine.[1]

Visions of Eternity[edit]

Act 1[edit]

During the Tyrian Alliance's exploration of Janthir, a storage facility containing the historical asuran genius Zinn's research was recovered from Rata Novus. High Councillor Flax of the Arcane Council discreetly coordinated with Inquest leadership to raid the storage facility for data. Vloxx, having been recently promoted to one of the Inquest's leaders, reached out to Flax for a mutually beneficial deal involving sending an expedition to Castora, a fabled island rich with magic whose location the Inquest had been able to pinpoint with new information found in Zinn's recovered notes. A deal was struck: in exchange for the Arcane Council sanctioning the Inquest's mission, Vloxx would bring back whatever he found on Castora to Rata Sum for the asura's benefit. After winning Flax over and using Councillor Ludo's busy schedule in the alliance meetings to their advantage, the Inquest's representative Councillor Yahk volunteered to take over Ludo's role in her absence to oversee rations and supplies originally meant for the Tyrian Alliance and discreetly redirected them to Vloxx's expedition instead.[3]

After all the necessary preparations had been made, Vloxx set sail to Castora along with his lieutenants Principal Biomancer Sebb and Overseer Kuda as well as their followers in 1338 AE. The expedition lost some vessels and krewe members due to the island's magical and physical defenses, forcing the director to seek to replenish their diminished ranks with local castaways who had formed the rival Freebooter and Hullgardener societies. Vloxx was able to persuade the freebooter Captain Jessica Hammerhart to aid his cause; in return for gaining access to freebooter laborers and being allowed to operate within the pirates' cave network of Shipwreck Strand, the Inquest would provide the freebooters with some golems and augmentation tech to give the pirates an edge over the Hullgardeners. Ever shrewd, Vloxx gifted the freebooters with older Inquest equipment which was not critical to their mission. The director extended the same offer to the Hullgardeners as well in order to benefit from both factions, but Mayor Osborne rejected the offer.[4]

In the two weeks since their arrival to Castoran shores and striking a deal with the freebooters, the Inquest had managed to construct an extensive subterranean research facility in Shipwreck Strand but had also pushed deeper inland to build their base of operations, the Command Complex, in Starlit Weald, while Sebb boosted their ranks with local wildlife which he had augmented to become subservient. Vloxx spent his time in the Command Complex overseeing the operation and studying artifacts, historical records from Zinn and seers, and anything else of note that could lead him towards his ultimate goal.

Act 2[edit]

Vloxx learned about the Pact Commander's arrival to Castora from Kuda and Sebb who had briefly confronted the Commander's group earlier in Shipwreck Strand. Some time later he ran into the Commander when the latter was in the process of infiltrating the Command Complex to find a kit to fix the confiscated Inquest golem PTM with. The director greeted the Commander calmly and politely, explaining the general nature of his mission and revealing via evidence that the Tyrian Alliance, who the Commander was working for, was more duplicitous than the Commander had expected and that Isgarren, the Commander's seer ally, was hiding something about Castora from the Commander. Vloxx suggested that he and the Commander need not be enemies as both of them wanted to save the world. However, he could not go into detail about his plans because he knew that Kuda's guards would come investigate the disturbance and he could not be seen collaborating with the Commander.

Before leaving, the director left the Commander with a personal communication device with which he contacted the Commander later when the Commander was interrogating the repaired PTM about Vloxx's history and mission. Vloxx elaborated further on his motives and how in his view the Inquest were a necessary tool to accomplish his noble goals. The director claimed to want to prepare Tyria for what was to come; while he could trust the Commander to have Tyria's best interests at heart, he could not say the same about the rest of the Commander's allies who might have ulterior motives. He declined to join the Commander's side for the time being and instead asked the Commander to continue on the path as he would contact the Commander again later.[1]

However, the Commander contacted Vloxx first after learning about the existence of Ancora, an arcane staff of seer origins which granted its wielder the power to undergo a greater rite of ascension than the one used by Isgarren to elevate mortals into immortal wizards. The director confirmed the Commander's suspicions as he explained that he intended to locate Ancora and perform the rite on himself. However, he was quick to point out that he did not desire power or legacy as he only intended to wield the power temporarily before returning control of Tyria's future to her people. Having witnessed what wielding great power did to unprepared mortals, the Commander urged Vloxx to reconsider his plans and that they could find a better, safer way to protect Tyria. The director seemingly acknowledged the Commander's concerns, promising to speak again soon.

The Commander, Isgarren, and their allies Rytlock Brimstone and Sayida the Sly searched for Ancora to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, unaware that Vloxx and his lieutenants had discreetly been keeping an eye on their movements. Once the party had located the arcane staff deep within a concealed seer vault, the Inquest trio forcibly opened the way into the vault with explosions and used the party's disorientation and Isgarren's weakened state due to the vault's arcane wards to their advantage so the director could claim the staff for himself. In order to let himself depart without interference, Vloxx tasked Sebb to keep the Commander's party occupied, and Kuda soon followed the director as the pair retreated.

Vloxx learned of Sebb's defeat and contacted the Commander some time later, thanking them for disposing of Sebb whose cruelty had far outweighed his usefulness in the director's eyes. He expressed regret at having deceived the Commander but claimed that the circumstances had dictated his choices for him. Vloxx ignored the Commander's pleas to stop the mission as he was determined to save Tyria by any means necessary. Despite his resolve, the director still told the Commander that the two of them were not enemies, and he expressed hope that the Commander would see his point of view in time.[5]
