Goss Aleessh
Goss Aleessh was a Forgotten who had been a close friend of the mursaat Elka. Goss participated in the trials of Dunes of Despair and Thirsty River along with other Forgotten to test the might and conviction of the Chosen heroes and the ghost of Turai Ossa who were seeking Ascension.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Goss Aleessh arrived with the rest of the Forgotten servants of the Six Gods on Tyria from the Mists at some point.[1] With the Seer leader Sidony's urging, the Forgotten eventually joined forces with the Seers and the other elder races of Tyria to combat the Elder Dragons.[2] When the Forgotten and their mursaat allies left to fight the Elder Dragon Zhaitan, however, Sidony suddenly withdrew the Seers' support, and the dwarves and the jotun failed to bring reinforcements as well, leading to massive casualties among the Forgotten and the mursaat.[3] During this time Goss had befriended the mursaat Elka who had also participated on the failed assault. The two became close and would hold hands in the first mursaat city Apavim. Elka had held no closer friend in the years after Goss's eventual parting, not even her husband.[4][5]
Angered by the Seers' perceived betrayal of the alliance, the mursaat used their shadowcraft to vanish into a layer between Tyria and the Mists, leaving the rest of the elder races to fend for themselves, while the Seers gathered the world's remaining magic into the bloodstone. Some time after the Elder Dragons had fallen into slumber, the mursaat returned and began waging a brutal war against the Seers.[6]
The Forgotten participated in the war against the fallen god Abaddon and his Margonite followers in 0 AE, ultimately helping the Five Gods quell Abaddon's rebellion and imprison him and the Margonites in the Realm of Torment although it led to the Crystal Sea turning into the Crystal Desert and created the sulfurous Desolation on Elona's shores. Ghosts of some of the slain Margonites such as King Khimaar lingered on, cursing the Forgotten for their fall.
While some Forgotten were tasked with guarding Abaddon and his followers after the Five Gods' departure from Tyria, another group of Forgotten, including Goss, retreated to the Crystal Desert and focused on iterpreting the dragon Glint's Flameseeker Prophecies from 272 AE onward under Josso Essher. Despite her loyalties to Glint and Josso, Goss remembered their bond with Elka and contacted Elka's daughter Miri a decade later to inform her of the prophecies that seemed to foretell the mursaat's doom. Miri would respond to Goss sometime later, assuring the Forgotten that the mursaat would do whatever necessary to preserve their race.[4][5]
The Forgotten witnessed Turai Ossa and his people's Great Pilgrimage to the desert to seek Ascension in 868 AE. Turai's loyal entourage erected temples, raising pillars toward the heavens, and even founded towns such as Lannur and a sizable colony during their journey. Despite these efforts, however, Ascension eluded the human king who eventually came into conflict with the Forgotten and faced distrust and greed from his fellow pilgrims. The entourage lost their lives in the ensuing battles with the Forgotten, in-fighting among the pilgrims, and to other hazards in the desert.[7] Turai would haunt the desert as the Ghostly Hero ever since with hopes of finding his reward in the afterlife.[8]
Guild Wars Prophecies[edit]
In 1072 AE, a group of Chosen heroes entered the desert in search of Ascension. They were enlisted by the spectral Turai to help him claim the Throne of Pellentia from another ghostly usurper, enter the Rift to seek out the Hall of Heroes, and gain the favor of the gods to enter Augury Rock for the final challenge of the Ascension ritual. Goss was among the Forgotten who took part in the trials at the Dunes of Despair and Thirsty River, fighting against Turai and his mortal followers to test the mortals' might and conviction. Although the heroes managed to kill the Forgotten during the trials, the latter kept resurrecting and continued attacking the heroes until the trials had been completed and the heroes had entered Augury Rock.[9]
Legacy[edit]
Goss's later fate remains unknown; they might have either fallen during Abaddon's return in Nightfall in 1075 AE, sought out their kin in the Mists, or survived long enough to be Branded alongside Josso and other Elonian Forgotten by the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik during his flight to the desert in 1328 AE.
While exploring the central areas of the fallen mursaat city of Bava Nisos in 1338 AE, the Tyrian Alliance discovered surviving letters written by Goss and Miri near the Mists Gate. These letters shed light on how the mursaat had become aware of Glint's Flameseeker Prophecies and, in an effort to prevent the prophecies from coming true, had helped cause their own downfall at the hands of the Chosen heroes and the titans as Glint had foreseen.
