Purists
“Our nation is infected. Rife with turpitude! Rotting with sedition! Fowl strut among us, presuming they are equals. Poisoning your sons! Sullying your daughters! Do NOT succumb to this indoctrination! Cantha is your birthright. Cantha belongs to Canthans!
— The Ritualist in Search the isle for squatters with M.U.P. Analyst Bian
The Purists are human members of a Canthan sect that is a remnant of the fallen, xenophobic Ministry of Purity. They view themselves as true Canthans and wear masks that mimic the helmets once worn by the Ministry of Purity. Unlike their Ministry of Purity predecessors and despite what some of the public Purist agitators claim, the Purists are not above recruiting Luxons and Kurzicks into their ranks. The Purists appear to operate as autonomous cells so the capture or death of one cell's leader will not expose the entire organization.
History[edit]
Early history[edit]
- Primary article: Ministry of Purity
Following the triumph of the joint forces of Empress Haebaragi and her tengu allies in the Canthan civil war against the Ministry of Purity forces led by Minister Yeongi at Zen Daijun Temple in 1747 CC (1237 AE), the surviving members of the Ministry of Purity scattered and went into hiding.[1][2][3] Some survivors found refuge in the mountains of Shing Jea Island, while one code-named "Gold Serpent" sought to provide an "offering" to the Celestials before disappearing.[4]
Despite Haebaragi's efforts, some sympathizers and followers of the Ministry of Purity had survived the purges and founded various clandestine cells that would collectively become known as the Purists years later. Some Canthan investigators had realized that the threat was not truly gone and that sympathizers still lingered on in imperial society with hopes of restoring the Ministry of Purity's ideology to power, but their warnings were ignored.[5]
At some point, the Purists took over the Isle of Reflection, where the Ministry of Purity founder Reiko Murakami had been assassinated by a united force of heroes and Canthan locals centuries ago, and treated it as a holy site dedicated to their martyr.[6]
As the years passed, the Purists became more and more entrenched in Canthan society, operating both openly as agitators but also in the shadows of clandestine deals and even within the government as they gradually infiltrated several Ministries, even reaching leadership positions within.[7] Their ranks included not only the poor but the rich as well, and despite their agitators' claims they occasionally recruited Kurzicks and Luxons into their ranks as well.
End of Dragons[edit]
The Purists attempted to gain public support by spreading propaganda, historical revisionism and xenophobia to some degree of success. The issue of Purist activity in New Kaineng City got far worse when a person code-named "White Falcon" rallied the scattered Purists under his command and turned them into what was effectively a domestic terrorist organization.[8] The arrival of the violent Aetherblades and the subsequent influx of visitors from Central Tyria and Elona in 1845 CC (1335 AE) only boosted the Purists' resolve as they could blame Aetherblades terror on Empress Ihn opening Cantha's borders to the outside world. As part of her ongoing diplomatic mission, Krytan ambassador Kasmeer Meade assisted Canthan officials Akane and Bian with a group of volunteers to expel Purist squatters on the Isle of Reflection and claim it for a guild hall.
The Purist threat was taken more seriously after Minister Li Ha-Eung, the head of the Ministry of Security, was revealed to be the ringleader code-named "White Falcon." After being arrested by the combined efforts of Detective Rama, Precinct Captain Cho Min, and the Pact Commander, Li revealed the identities of several other prominent Purists while in custody.[9][10]
Visions of Eternity[edit]
The Purists learned about the recently formed Tyrian Alliance's expedition to Castora in 1338 AE and sent their operative Mi-Sung, code-named "Rose Viper", to the island continent to scout for potential opportunities to claim Castora's power for the organization. Mi-Sung had contacts with local Freebooters and Inquest and used them to get what she wanted, even resorting to torture and murder. She eventually crossed paths with the Pact Commander who was investigating her bloody trail and attempted to hurt the Commander after trapping them until Kestrel Choole, who had also been after the Purist, arrived to even the odds. Mi-Sung was ultimately defeated and apprehended for questioning although she claimed that the Purists would claim the power in Castora through Cantha.[11]
