Kela's Scalding Wave. |
Kela, Seneschal of Waves is an extremely powerful crustacean seneschal shackled by seer-made chains. She is a target of the Inquest's Principal Biomancer Sebb, who seeks to control her.
| The seneschals—Kela and Gwyllian—were both assigned to forever guard Castora and its secrets when the seers left the island.[1] |
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Prior to the seers' departure to face the mursaat in battle in Janthir, Sidony bound Kela and a few other noteworthy beasts with powerful magic to guard Castora's secrets from both trespassers and the seer Isgarren whom Sidony had banished from the island. These bound beasts became known as seneschals, and the magic would keep them alive for millennia and compel them to carry out the seers' last command as they would guard specific territories of Castora.[1][2][3] Kela, Seneschal of Waves, would sink countless trespassing ships near Castora while remaining unseen, helping in part to prevent interlopers from entering and leaving the island alive. The castaways who survived her attacks would name Seneschal Sands, the area where Kela was seen patrolling, after her on Shipwreck Strand. Drunken castaways would boldly boast that they could fight Kela bare-handed to make themselves seem more impressive to their fellow castaways.[4]
Despite the seneschal's vigilant patrols, however, Captain Weyandt managed to reach Castora intact somehow millennia later and hid three pieces of the aquabreather Agaleus across Shipwreck Strand. Some crew members, including Ryumond Lakes, mutinied and were cast off on the island as a result, while Weyandt seemingly returned home safely without being sunk by Kela unlike any other castaways who remained stuck on Castora.[5][6]
Visions of Eternity[edit]
When the Inquest sailed to Castora in 1338 AE, they lost the majority of their ships to arcane and natural hazards in Castoran waters. Kela killed four Inquest scientists when they trespassed on her territory, and the Inquest learned her name from local castaways.[7] As the Tyrian Alliance pursued the Inquest weeks later, their ships were also ambushed by Kela who successfully sank the Martingale while hiding out of sight beneath the waves although her roar was heard by the voyagers.[8] However, the seneschal was unable to sink the other alliance ship, The Dark Leviathan, due to it being magically warded by the seer Isgarren who was onboard.
After making landfall, the alliance was constantly being harried by aggressive crustaceans which were working for Kela. The Pact Commander, Rytlock Brimstone, and Sayida the Sly tracked the Inquest's movements and eventually found Sebb and Overseer Kuda burying artifacts in the sand. Upon being found out, Sebb decided to test his theory and tossed one of the artifacts at the interrupting trio, rousing Kela who arrived to claim the objects. The Inquest pair escaped while the alliance trio had to face the enraged seneschal in combat. The trio quickly noticed the magical chains binding Kela and realized that her actions were compelled by magic rather than her free will, so they decided to calm her down by unearthing and tossing artifacts to her instead of trying to kill her. After Kela had acquired enough artifacts, she calmed down and no longer acted hostile towards the trio who watched her vanish into the sea. The Commander recognized one of the artifacts as a shadowstone piece and realized that the artifacts and the source of the strange magic were related to the seers.[9]
